Luke 2:30-32 "For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel."
Who is Jesus Christ, the child spoken of in Luke 2? He is everything you need--for life and for today. Like many of the Gospel accounts of the Lord's birth, you will find several names for Christ in Luke 2, all of which are important. In verses 25-33, you will find five names:
1. "the consolation of Israel"--The word consolation means comfort. These people had been waiting on God's comfort for centuries! The wonderful truth is that Christ is comfort, and He can be your comfort today.
2. "the Lord's Christ"--The word Christ means "anointed one." Luke 4:18-21 tells us that Jesus was anointed to preach the gospel. Jesus Christ is God's "anointed One," and the good news of salvation is found in Him!
3. "the child Jesus"--The word child reminds us of the amazing miracle of God's incarnation. That is, God in heaven took on human flesh. That is amazing! The God who cannot be contained by the world He made contained Himself by being born.
4. "thy salvation"--Salvation is not a "thing"; it is a person. In other words, salvation is not found in a creed; it is found in Christ. Jesus Christ is God's salvation!
5. "a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel"--These names refer back to the words all people at the end of verse 31. "All people" means both Jew and Gentile. I am so glad that Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life" for Gentiles as well! He is the Light of the world!
Luke 2 reminds us that Jesus Christ is everything you need for life and for today. The Lord Jesus was God's comfort, His Christ, but yet a child. He is God's salvation, and He is the Light of all the world for both Jews and Gentiles! During the Christmas season, I hope you will be reminded of exactly who Jesus Christ is. He is everything you need for life and for today!
