Gn. 1:1-2
2 Samuel 7:22 Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for
there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all
that we have heard with our ears.

I. GOD IS GREAT IN HIS PERSON
1. He is Preeminent [v. 1, Colossians 1:18 …that in
all things he might have the preeminence.]
Psalm 77:13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who
is so great a God as our God?
2. He is Powerful [v. 1-3]
In 2 Chronicles 2:5-6, Solomon said, “And the house
which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods. And the house which
I build is great: for great is our God above all gods. But who is able to build
him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who
am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before
him?”
3. He is Personal [v. 1 Creative, v. 2 Active, v. 3
Verbal, v. 4 Visual, etc.]
Psalm 48:1 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be
praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
II. GOD IS GREAT IN HIS POWER
1. Power to Create [v. 1, Jer. 10:10-16]
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an
everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall
not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods
that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the
earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he
hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by
his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in
the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth;
he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his
treasures. Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded
by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath
in them. They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their
visitation they shall perish. The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is
the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of
hosts is his name.
2. Power to Control [v. 2-4, 6, 9]
Matthew 14:32-33 And when they were come into the
ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him,
saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
3. Power to be Considered [v. 10-12, 21-28]
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the
creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are
made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
III. GOD IS GREAT IN HIS PLURALITY
1. God the Father [v. 1, 26]
Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at sundry times and in divers
manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last
days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by
whom also he made the worlds;
2. God the Holy Spirit [v. 2]
Job 26:12-14 He divideth the sea with his power, and
by his understanding he smiteth through the proud. By his spirit he hath
garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Lo, these are
parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of
his power who can understand?
3. God the Son [Heb. 1:1-2]
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time
past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us
by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the
worlds;
Jn. 1:1-5, 10-14 In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with
God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that
was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light
shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the
world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as
many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will
of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we
beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of
grace and truth.
