MARK 14:41-46
Pastor Rick Jackson
Most, if not all, of us are familiar with Judas’ betrayal of
Jesus to His enemies but have you ever considered that this betrayal was just
one in a long line of betrayals? Judas was guilty of betrayal several times as
given to us in the Holy Scriptures.
I. THE BETRAYAL OF AN EARTHLY TRUST [John 12:1-6]
Then Jesus six days before the Passover came to Bethany,
where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they
made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at
the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard , very
costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and
the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then saith one of his
disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not
this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he
said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the
bag, and bare what was put therein.
Have you been given an earthly trust? What have you done
with it?
John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye
believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good
and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make
thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
II. THE BETRAYAL OF A SACRED TRUST [Luke 6:13-16]
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and
of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Simon, (whom he also
named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, And
Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.
Acts 7:52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers
persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the
Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
2 Timothy 3:1-5, This know also, that in the last
days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful,
unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent,
fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded,
lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness,
but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
III. THE BETRAYAL OF A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY -Judas let Satan in several
times but never let Jesus in once
Luke 22:3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed
Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
John 13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him.
Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and
knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will
sup with him, and he with me.
IV. THE BETRAYAL OF THE SOVEREIGN SAVIOUR [Mt. 26:46-50]
Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth
betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with
him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders
of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I
shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and
said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore
art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
Luke 22:48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest
thou the Son of man with a kiss?
Heb. 10:26-31 For if we sin wilfully after that we
have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for
sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation,
which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses law died without
mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye,
shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and
hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that
hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And
again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the
hands of the living God.
V. THE BETRAYAL OF THE SAVIOUR’S MERCY [Mt. 27:1-5]
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders
of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: And when they had
bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented
himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and
elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And
they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of
silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It
was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but
seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life,
lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
Ps. 116:12-14 What shall I render unto the LORD for
all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the
name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all
his people.
Lk. 23:39-42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember
me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say
unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
