MARK 5:21-24, 35-43

We who live in Florida know a thing or two about storms… or,
at least, we think we do. The Bible has much to say about storms. God knows all
about them. In the last two weeks we looked at “The Devil’s Storms” and “the
World’s Storms”. This week, we will look at “The Flesh’s Storm” and conclude
our mini-series from this section of the Gospel of Mark.
I. THE FLESH IS WEAK [Mark 14:38 The flesh is weak.]
1. The Flesh is Temporary [v. 21-23, James 4:14] What is
your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away.
2. The Flesh is Trying [v. 24-26, Job 14:1] Man that is born
of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
3. The Flesh is Transformable [v. 27-34, 1 Cor. 6:9-11, 2
Cor. 5:17, 12:9]
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the
kingdom of God? Be? not deceived: neither: fornicators, nor, idolaters, nor,
adulterers, nor, effeminate, nor, abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor
thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall
inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but
ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by
the Spirit of our God.
If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things
are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my
strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory
in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
II. THE FLESH IS WICKED
1. The Flesh Seeks to Separate People from Christ [v. 35,
Is. 59:1-3]
Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot
save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have
separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you,
that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers
with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered
perverseness.
2. The Flesh Seeks to Separate People from Faith [v. 36,
Gal. 5:19-24]
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft,
hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings,
murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you
before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things
shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance:
against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the
flesh with the affections and lusts.
3. The Flesh Seeks to Separate People from God’s Word [v. 37-40]
III. THE FLESH IS WORKING AGAINST GOD [v. 41-43, Gal. 5:16-17]
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil
the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye
cannot do the things that ye would.
1. The Wages of Sin is Death [Rm. 6:23] The wages of sin is
death.
2. The Last Enemy is Death [1 Cor. 15:26] The last enemy
that shall be destroyed is death.
3. Christ has Conquered Death [v. 22-28, Romans 6:9]
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no
more; death hath no more dominion over him.
