MARK 5:1-20
Pastor Rick
Jackson
We who live
in Florida know a thing or two about storms… or, at least, we think we do. The
Bible has much to say about storms. God knows all about them. Last week we looked
at “The World’s Storms”. Next week, Lord willing, we will look at “The Flesh’s
Storm” all from this section of the Gospel of Mark. Today we examine – The
Devil’s Storms.
I. THE
DEVIL’S DEVICES [v. 1-2, 2 Cor. 2:11] Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not
ignorant of his devices.
1. Deception
[Revelation 12:9, Jn. 14:6, 17:17]
And the
great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which
deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were
cast out with him.
Jesus saith
unto him, I am the way , the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by me.
Sanctify
them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
2.
Oppression [Acts 10:38] “to exercise dominion over”
How God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing
good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
3.
Possession [Mark 5, 1 Jn. 4:1-4]
Beloved,
believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because
many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of
God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of
God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the
flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have
heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of
God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in
you, than he that is in the world.
II. THE MISTAKES
OF MANKIND
1. The
World’s Weak Ways [v. 3-5, Heb. 10:11, Mt. 7:21-23]
And every
priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices,
which can never take away sins:
Not every
one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but
he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have
cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I
profess unto them , I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
2. The
Flesh’s Faulty Focus [v. 5, Isaiah 64:6]
But we are
all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we
all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
3. The
Devil’s Dirty Dealings [v. 2-5, Luke 11:24-26] Do you think he thought he would
come to this?
When the
unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking
rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came
out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and
taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in,
and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
III. THE
SAVIOUR’S SOLUTION
1. Recognition
[v. 6-7a]
2. Reception
[v. 6-15, Jn. 1:12, Philippians 4:7]
But as many
as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them
that believe on his name:
And the
peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds
through Christ Jesus.
3. Reigning
[v. 16-20]
