Should You Exercise?

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals
I Timothy 4:8  "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

Should You Exercise?

I know a pastor who has two children who are amazingly proficient on a stringed instrument.  I know this because I was recently at their church and could hear the concert in the parsonage in my trailer!  I asked how his kids became so skilled, and he told me that they started playing when they were three years old.  That is dedication!  Even more, that is hours of practice time!  The same is true for runners and history experts.  You will expand the ability you exercise.

What is most expanding in your life right now?  Whether you realize them or not, there are habits that define your day.  Of all the things you will exercise today, is God one of them?  Is He the most important?  There are many things in life that we can and should enjoy.  "Bodily exercise," the Bible says, "profiteth little."  There is profit in exercise.  It teaches discipline and character, among other things.  Plus, some of you enjoy it, and that is ok, too!

The point is, no matter how much you exercise, practice the piano, or study historical facts, those will only profit so much in the grand scheme of things.  But the Bible says, "Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."  You can't beat profit in everything, right now and in eternity!

You should exercise your mind.  You should exercise your body.  But whatever you exercise today, make sure you "exercise" godliness.  Know what the Bible says about matters of life, and just do it!
