Jeremiah 10:10 "But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation."
Do you have a computer more than five years old? Do you drive a vehicle that is more than ten years old? Do you have clothes that are more than ten years old? If so, what are you probably interested in doing? Upgrading! I must admit, I recently realized that I have a suit that I bought nine years ago. It was pretty stylish back then, but I'm not sure it is in style today!
The truth is, anything man-made needs to be upgraded and improved at some point, whether that involves computers, cars, clothes, or a god of someone's making. Jeremiah 10 reminds us that a man-made god always needs an upgrade. A god that you can make is no more able to care for you than a computer, car, or piece of clothing. You can only improve on a god of your own making.
In contrast, there is nothing and no one like God. He is not man-made; He made man. He is exclusively and utterly unique, and He never needs improving! He is "the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king." He is "the former of all things." You cannot and will not improve on God.
We can get so lost in this world's goods that we forget that anything man-made will always need upgrading and improving. We think, "If I just had that, then I would be happy." God's advice in Jeremiah is, "Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them."
God is not fashionable, trendy, or popular; God is timeless. You cannot improve upon or do better than the God who made you. You can only improve a god of your own making, and any god you can make is not worth worshipping. Follow the true God, the living God, the everlasting King.
