LAYING DOWN THE LAW [part 2]

EXODUS 22

Pastor Rick Jackson

A reminder:

After the giving of the 10 Commandments, which were a general overview of what God was giving, came the more specific cases and elaborations dealing with the 10. The next few chapters deal with specific types of the broad sins laid out in the 10 and punishment suitable for the law breakers. Throughout all this we should note several truths:

I. THE LAW WAS PRACTICAL

1. FOR A PEOPLE WITH NO POLICE

2. FOR A PEOPLE WITH NO PRISONS

II. THE LAW WAS PREVENTATIVE

1. IT PREVENTED "OVERKILL"

2. IT PREVENTED "ABUSE" (people getting away with their sins)

III. THE LAW WAS PROCLAMATIONAL

1. IT PROCLAIMED GOD'S HOLINESS & MAJESTY

2. IT PROCLAIMED GOD'S LOVING INTEREST & CARE
-------------------------------------------------------------

I. PROPERTY RIGHTS [v. 1-15]

1. Punishment for Theft, Protection for Innocent Purchasers [v. 1]

2. Penalties for Theft, Reasonable Property Defense [v. 2-4]

3. Property Violations [v. 5-6]

4. "Rental " Responsibilities [v. 7-15]

II. PARENTAL PRIVILEGE [v. 16-17]

1. The Seriousness of Seduction [v. 16]

2. The Satisfaction of a Father [v. 17]

III. MISCELLANEOUS PROCLAMATIONS [v. 18-31]

1. Seriousness of Soul-murder [v. 18-20]

2. Protection of the Under-privileged [v. 21-27]

3. Respect for Authorities [v. 28, word for "gods" is translated judges in vs. 8-9]

4. Put God First [v. 29-31]

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
