TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE

JOHN 9:38-41

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE HEALING OF THE BLIND MAN [9:1-12]

1. The Light of the World [9:1-5]

2. The Sight of the World [9:6-7]

3. The Plight of the World [9:8-12] plight refers to the situation, usually bad, someone is in

II. THE “HEARING” OF THE PHARISEES [9:13-34] a judicial situation

1. The Failure of Men [9:13-17]

2. The Fear of Man [9:18-23, Mt. 10:27-28]

What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

3. The Foolishness of Men [9:24-34, 1 Cor. 1:18-25] cp. v. 2 w/v. 34 ignorance/arrogance

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock , and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

III. THE HEARING OF THE SHEEP [9:35-10:21]

1. Sometimes Blind Men See [9:11, 17, 25-33, 35-38]

2. Sometimes Seeing Men Are Blind [9:39-41]

3. Saved People are the Only Ones that can Really See and Hear [10:1-21; 2 Cor. 4:3-6]

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness , hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
