GALATIANS 1:1-5

I. “FOR OUR SINS” [v. 4]

1. The Great Deed [v. 4, Jn. 15:13]

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

2. The Great Deliverer [v. 4, 1 Pt. 3:18]

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

3. The Great Debt [v. 4, Heb. 2:9, 1 Jn. 2:2]

-But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

- And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

 

II. “THAT HE MIGHT DELIVER US FROM THIS PRESENT EVIL WORLD” [v. 4]

1. From the Fate of this World [v. 4, 1 Cor. 11:32, 2 Th. 1:7-9]

-But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

-And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.

2. From the “father” of this World [v. 4, Jn. 8:44, Mt. 25:41, 2 Cor. 4:4-6]

-Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

-the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness , hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

3. From the Fashion of this World [v. 4, 1 Cor. 7:31, Rm. 12:2]

-the fashion of this world passeth away.

-be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind

 

III. “ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD AND OUR FATHER”

1. It is Not God’s Will that Any should Perish but many Will [v. 4, Mt. 18:14, 2 Pt. 3:9, Acts 17:30]

- Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

-The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

-And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

2. It Was God’s Will that Christ Die in Our Place [v. 4, Is. 53:4-6]

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

3. It was God’s Will that Christ Be Satisfied with the Fruit of His Labors [v. 4, Is. 53:10-12]

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
