GREAT THEMES IN JOHN’S EPISTLES

1, 2, & 3 JOHN

Pastor Rick Jackson

There are many great themes in John’s epistles, but we are going to center on three this service.

I. 1 JOHN PRESENTS THE MANIFESTATION OF CHRIST’S PURPOSE

1. Christ Manifested God’s Love Through Salvation [1:2, 4:9]

2. Christ Manifested Salvation by Removing Sin [1 John 3:5]

3. Christ Manifested His Purpose by Defeating Satan [1 John 3:8]

II. 2 JOHN PRESENTS THE GREAT THEME OF CHRIST’S DEITY

1. Christ became Fully Man [v.  7]

2. Christ is Fully God [v. 9, Jn. 1:1-3, 14]

-In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

-And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

3. Christ’s Deity Is NOT an Optional Doctrine [v. 9-11]

III. 3 JOHN PRESENTS THE GREAT THEME OF CHRIST’S TRUTH

1. Truth Produces Joy [v. 2-4, 1 Jn. 1:4]

2. Truth Should be Supported [v. 5-8]

3. Truth Produces Good Reports [v. 12, Heb. 11:1-2, Rm. 10:17]

- Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report.

- So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
