Isaiah 51:1
Hearken
to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the
rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

I. THE
CALL TO SALVATION [MATTHEW 19:16-26]
II. THE
CALL TO SECURITY [JOHN 10:23-30]
And Jesus
walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews round about him,
and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ,
tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the
works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe
not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my
voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life;
and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My
Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck
them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one
III. THE CALL TO SERVICE
[MATT. 4:18-22, LUKE 5:27-32, JOHN 1:35-45]
-And Jesus,
walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew
his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith
unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway
left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two
brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with
Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they
immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
- And after
these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the
receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up,
and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there
was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. But
their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye
eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answering said unto them,
They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to
call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
IV. THE
CALL TO SURRENDER [MATTHEW 8:18-22]
Now when
Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the
other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow
thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes,
and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay
his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to
go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead
bury their dead.
V. THE
CALL TO SELF-DENIAL [MATTHEW 16:24-25, JOHN 12:24-26]
-Then said
Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall
lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
- Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it
abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his
life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it
unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am,
there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
VI. THE
CALL TO FOCUS [JOHN 21:18-22]
Verily,
verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and
walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch
forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou
wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God.
And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning
about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his
breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing
him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If
I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
