THREE GOOD
PERFECT GIFTS
JAMES
2:16-18
Pastor Rick
Jackson
Every good
gift is from God. Think about that. Every single solitary good thing you ever
have gotten came from God. It doesn’t matter who or what God used to deliver
it, if it was good, truly good, it was from God. Then it says every perfect
gift is from God. Now there are many, many good gifts that God has given us…
but the number of perfect gifts is relatively smaller. Every good gift is not a
perfect gift but every perfect gift is a good gift. Of the good and perfect
gifts let us see the greatest three, and as God would have it, they are closely
related.
I. THE
BIBLE IS A PERFECT GIFT
1. It
Converts the Soul [Ps. 19:7, 1 Peter 1:23-25]
- The law of
the Lord is perfect, converting the soul:
- Being born
again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which
liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of
man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth
away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by
the gospel is preached unto you.
2. It
Completes the Saint [2 Tm. 3:16-17]
All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God
may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
3. It
Conveys the Solutions [James 1:21-25]
Wherefore
lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with
meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers
of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a
hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural
face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway
forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of
liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of
the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
II. THE
SAVIOUR IS A PERFECT GIFT
1. He Always
Has Been [Dt. 32:1-4, 1 Cor. 10:1-4]
-GIVE ear, O
ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My
doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the
small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I
will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the
Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and
without iniquity, just and right is he.
- MOREOVER,
brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were
under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto
Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And
did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock
that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
2. He Always
Will Be [Col. 1:27-28, Heb. 13:8]
- To whom
God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the
Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning
every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man
perfect in Christ Jesus:
- Jesus
Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
3. He Always
Helps Others [Mark 10:45, Hebrews 4:16, 7:25]
-For even
the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his
life a ransom for many.
- Let us
therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and
find grace to help in time of need.
- Wherefore
he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing
he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
III. THE
HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERFECT GIFT
1. God Gives
Better Gifts than Sinful Men [Lk. 11:13]
If ye then,
being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall
your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
2. God Gives
the Holy Spirit to all Believers [Acts 2:38, Rm. 8:8-17]
- Then Peter
said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.
- So then
they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but
in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man
have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the
body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But
if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that
raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his
Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the
flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die:
but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For
as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have
not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the
Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth
witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
3. The Holy
Spirit Gives Spiritual Gifts [1 Cor. 12, Rm. 12]
