1 TIMOTHY
2:3-6
Pastor Rick
Jackson
For this
is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men
to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God,
and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a
ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
This verse
is but a small indication of the uniqueness of the person of Jesus Christ.
Among the throngs of humanity Jesus is unique. Among the persons of the Godhead
Jesus is unique. There has never been one like Him, there is no one like Him
now, and there will never be another like Him. He is unique!
I. JESUS
IS UNIQUE IN HIS HUMANITY
1. His
Singular Pre-existence [Micah 5:2]
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out
of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings
forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
2. His
Singular Birth [Is. 7:14, Mt. 1:18-25]
- Therefore
the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and
bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
- Now the
birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to
Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then
Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public
example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these
things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a
son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from
their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the
angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not
till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.
3. His
Singular Life [1 Timothy 3:16]
-And without
controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed
on in the world, received up into glory.
He was born
in an obscure village, the son of a peasant woman. He grew up in another
village, where he worked in a carpenter's shop until he was thirty. Then for
three years he became a wandering preacher. He never wrote a book. He never
held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn't go to
college. He never visited a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from
the place where he was born. He did none of those things one usually associates
with greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He was only thirty-three
when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. He
was turned over to his enemies and went through a mockery of a trial. He was
executed by the state. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his
clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead he was laid in a
borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.
Twenty
centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human
race and the leader of mankind's progress. All the armies that ever marched,
all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the
kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on
this earth as much as that One Solitary Life.
II. JESUS
IS UNIQUE IN HIS DEITY
1. His
Incarnation [Is. 9:6-7]
For unto us
a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his
shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government
and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his
kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from
henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
2. His
Expiration [Mt. 27:50-54]
Jesus, when
he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the
veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth
did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of
the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his
resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the
centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and
those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the
Son of God.
3. His Exaltation
[Phil. 2:9-11]
Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every
name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and
things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
III.
JESUS IS UNIQUE IN HIS IDENTITY
1. He is
Creator [Jn. 1:1-3, 10-14]
- In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without
him was not any thing made that was made.
- He was in
the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came
unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his
name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the
will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and
we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of
grace and truth.
2. He is King
[Mt. 2:1-2]
Now when
Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold,
there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is
born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to
worship him.
3. He is
Saviour [Is. 43:11, Titus 3:4-6]
- I, even I,
am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
- But after
that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works
of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by
the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on
us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
