John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

Mt. 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
Note the awe, the tremulous joy in verse 8. These good women "departed quickly" and "did run" to tell the disciples. There was god news indeed! They were convinced and yet frightened. Praise the Lord, some things almost too good to be true ARE true! - John R. Rice [Matthew, pg. 497]

Every student of the book of Matthew will see its dispensational character. There are certain things taught about the coming kingdom of Heaven, and the reign of Christ on earth is perhaps made clearer in this than in the other Gospels. In some sense this Gospel was directed especially to Jews. But it is important that no one be guilty of overemphasizing the dispensational teaching in Matthew. The book of Matthew is written of us today. It is for Gentiles as well as Jews; it is for this age as well as apostolic times. The Great Commission is in force until the Saviour comes again. Let us take the blessed promises of this Book as ours and the blessed commands as they were intended to be taken. - John R. Rice [Matthew, page 504]

The Bible is mine, gladly and fervently believed. We believe and defend the thesis of the Bible that "every word. . .proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matt. 4:4), that the Bible is a revelation "not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth" (I Cor. 2:13). Besides I have in the past written comments on every chapter in the Bible, and every principal verse. With holy joy this evangelist and editor writes of the Scriptures with constant pleading for Holy Spirit guidance as I read and write for all who might be helped by my writing. - John R. Rice [Genesis, pg. 19]

Men do not believe in evolution because they are convinced against their will; they believe in evolution because they want some way to explain things without God, without a God who demands judgment, a God who sends Christ-rejecting sinners to Hell. - John R. Rice [Genesis, pg. 74]

Does anybody in the world know of any example of evolution actually taking place today? They do not. Does anybody find in the fossil record intermediary links between the different kinds of plants and animals? They do not. There are no intermediate forms. Each kind in the fossil beds spring forth entirely new and separate. Is there anywhere in the world today where things that evolutionists claim happened before are happening now? Are there fossil beds being made? Are forests being buried and made into coal? Are tremendous quantities of animal matter and vegetable matter being made into petroleum today? They are not. Men who do not want God have a faith, not in the Bible or in Christ, but a faith in man's wisdom, a faith in a manmade system or doctrine, which cannot be proven. - John R. Rice [Genesis, pg. 74]

What kind of tree was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? We do not know. Was there some inherent quality in the fruit of that tree itself that caused people to know good and evil? I think not. The Lord did not have to have it here, and obviously it was here as a testing and a proof for man. I think the very act of disobedience was the sin. It was not that the fruit itself was sinful, except it was forbidden. Man sinned when he chose that which would make him wise in matters of the world, of sinful things and knowledge about things which he ought not to know or care about. - John R. Rice [Genesis, pg. 106-107]

Do I, then, believe the Bible account, that God formed man out of the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life? And that God put Adam into a deep sleep and took from his side a rib and from it formed a woman? Of course I do! So it is in divine revelation, and nobody else but God knows what happened and could tell it right. And God has told it in His infallible Word. Is, then, the story of creation a myth, a bit of poetry with some spiritual meaning? Oh, no! It is fact, eternal and certain truth. - John R. Rice [Genesis, pg. 108-109]
