THE PROMISE OF HIS COMING

2 PETER 3:4

I. THE DENIAL OF HIS COMING [v. 1-7]   We are told, in the first two verses to be mindful of God’s Word.

 

1. The Scoffers have their Arrogance [v. 3] and plenty of it!

 

2. The Scoffers have their Ignorance [v. 4-5] and plenty of it!

 

3. The Scoffers have their Comeuppance [v. 6-7]

 

II. THE DELAY OF HIS COMING [V. 8-12]

 

1. The Lord’s Person [v. 8]

 

-Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

-John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

-Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

-1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

-1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

 

2. The Lord’s Promise [v. 9-10]

 

3. The Lord’s Purpose [v. 11-12]

 

A song lyric says, “There's nothin' in this world Worth turnin' around to see - My eyes are on the prize That's awaitin' me by and by, And I'm a gonna keep on workin' Til he comes”

 

III. THE DELIGHT OF HIS COMING [v. 13-18]

 

1. The Dwelling of Righteousness [v. 13]

 

Rev. 21: 22-27 And I saw no temple therein : for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

 

2. The Diligence of Response [v. 14-18, 1 Jn. 3:1-3]

 

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

 

3. The Desire of All Nations [v. 18, Haggai 2:6-9]

 

For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
