Hebrews 11:32-34 And what shall I more say? for the time
would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah;
of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued
kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of
lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of
weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies
of the aliens.
Often times it is the people "with" that are
thought to be going places and doing things. Some are born with a silver spoon
in their mouth, with talent in abundance, wealth to spare and yet we find that
it is not always them that God uses. These things are not necessarily wrong if
a person uses them correctly but often that is not the case. You can have
everything but not have God and you will be a failure. You can have nothing and
have God and you can be a success. Jephthah was such a man.
I. JEPHTHAH WAS A PERSON
WITHOUT GUARANTEES [v. 1-3]
1. He had an illegitimate birth [v. 1]
2. He had ill-mannered brethren [v. 2-3a]
3. He had an ill-favored band [v. 3b]
Pr. 28:19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of
bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.
Pr. 30:9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the
LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
II. JEPHTHAH WAS A PERSON
WITHOUT GLAMOR [v. 4-28]
No putting on the dog, no false faces, he was what he was)
1. He was a proven leader [v. 4-6]
2. He was a positive leader [v. 7-11]
3. He was a prepared leader [v. 12-28]
III. JEPHTHAH WAS A PERSON
WITHOUT GUILE [v. 29-40]
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold
an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! John 1:47
1. His prayer was sincere [v. 29-31]
2. His promise was sacred [v. 32-35]
3. His progeny was Spiritual [v. 36-40]
