To the Contrary

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals

Esther 9:1 "Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)"

Did you read the news this morning? Whether you watch the news, read the newspaper, or check the headlines on your phone, you probably had the same thought I had: it's all bad! The local news is bad, the national news is bad, the world news is bad, and even the weather news is bad! Do you ever feel like all of the bad guys are winning? Well, that is nothing new. The news service in Esther's day would have been full of nothing but bad news!

God is able to take that which is bad and make something good of it. It is not a trite cliché; it is absolutely true: "All things work together for good to them that love God. . . ." (Romans 8:28) Even when the news is bad and the outlook is bleak, God is in control and He will win.

Today, it does not matter what a rogue nation in the Middle East does, what our government does not do, or what happens in your hometown; God will win.  In Esther's day, the bad intentions and bad news for God's people "was turned to the contrary." Everything the enemies of God's people threw at them, God turned it to the contrary. What happened to Haman's gallows? "So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared. . . ." What happened to Haman's house? "On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther. . . ." What happened to Haman's authority? "And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. . . ." God turned it all to the contrary!

I don't know what is coming at you today, and I suspect you probably don't know, either. Remember today that God will win. In the pages of history of the Bill Rice Ranch, God turned tragedy "to the contrary." Bill and Cathy Rice didn't ask for their daughter to lose her hearing from spinal meningitis. They didn't ask for the struggles associated with deafness when virtually no one was doing anything for the Gospel's sake. God took something my grandparents never would have chosen and used it in concert to produce this ministry to the Deaf and hearing. If you were able to ask my grandmother or "Tall Daddy" today if Romans 8:28 is true, you would most certainly hear, "Yes, sir!"

You can know today that God will win. Haman used force to get what he wanted, yet God used his own force against him. Haman went up against God, and God won. God will win today, in your life and in this world. Although you may not see His hand, you can know that, as in Esther's day, God is in control.
