HEBREWS 13:1-3
Pastor Rick Jackson
I. THEY ARE REAL
1. God Created them as “Angels” [Col. 1:16-17, Ps. 8:4-5]
“There's a golden street to walk upon, a bell I want to
ring, a brand new angel in the choir I want to hear her sing”
-For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and
that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or
dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and
for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
- What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of
man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,
and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
“They are not, nor ever have been human. God brought forth
angels on the ‘first day of creation’ after the time He created the heavens,
and before He created the earth, Genesis 1:1.
- In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
I say that because God created all things in the SIX 24 hour
days of creation, Exodus 20:11.
-For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea,
and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed
the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
-Job 38:4-7 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of
the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures
thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are
the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When
the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
When the earth was created the angels shouted for joy. The
"angels" had to be there at that time. – Jimmy DeYoung
2. God Created “Bunches” of Angels [Heb. 12:22, Ps. 68:17]
- But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the
living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
- The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of
angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
Mt. 26:53 “more than twelve legions of angels” 6000 x
12=72,000
Rev. 5:11 “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many
angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of
them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands” that’s
over 100 million
3. God Created Angels with Personalities & Interests [1
Pt. 1:11-12, Job 38:7, Lk. 15:10]
-Searching what , or what manner of time the Spirit of
Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the
sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow . Unto whom it was
revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things,
which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you
with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to
look into.
- When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of
God shouted for joy?
- Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of
the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
II. THEY DO APPEAR
1. In the Old Testament [Gn. 16:7, 18:2, 19:1ff, 28:12]
- to Hagar [Gn. 16:7]
- to Abraham & Sarah [Gn. 18:2]
- to Lot [Gn. 19:1ff]
- to Jacob [Gn. 28:12]
2. In the New Testament [Mt. 1:20, Lk. 1:26ff, Acts 27:23-24]
- But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of
the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear
not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of
the Holy Ghost.
- And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God
unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth
- For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I
am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before
Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
3. In this Life [Heb. 1:7, 13-14; 13:2, missionary accounts,
etc]
- And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits,
and his ministers a flame of fire
- But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my
right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all
ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of
salvation?
- Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some
have entertained angels unawares.
III. THEY
CAN ACT ON OUR BEHALF
1. Protect
Us From Spiritual Harm [Ps. 34:7, Dan. 10:12-13, 12:1]
- The angel
of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them
- Then said
he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine
heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were
heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia
withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes,
came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
- And at
that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the
children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was
since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people
shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
2. Protect
Us From Physical Harm [Dan. 6:22, 2 Kings 6:15-17]
-My God hath
sent his angel, and hath shut the lions mouths, that they have not hurt me:
forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O
king, have I done no hurt.
- And when
the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host
compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto
him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that
be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said,
LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes
of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and
chariots of fire round about Elisha.
3. Guide the
Dead to their Place [Lk. 16:22, Mt. 13:41-42]
-And it came
to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's
bosom
-The Son of
man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all
things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a
furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth
IV. THEY
ARE LIMITED
1. They Do
Not Know Everything [Mt. 24:36, Job 4:17-19, Mark 1:24]
-But of that
day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
- Shall
mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the
dust, which are crushed before the moth?
- Saying,
Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou
come to destroy us?]
2. They Are
Not to be Worshipped [Mt. 4:8-10, Rev. 19:10, 22:8-9]
- Again, the
devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the
kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these
things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith
Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship
the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
- And I fell
at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy
fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship
God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
- And I John
saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to
worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith
he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren
the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
3. They Are
Not Saviours [Col. 2:18, Gal. 1:6-8]
- Let no man
beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels,
intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his
fleshly mind
- I marvel
that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ
unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you,
and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let
him be accursed.
