POWER WE CAN USE

1 SAMUEL 16

I. THE HELPING POWER OF GOD [Hebrews 4:16]

 

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

 

1. To Overcome Fear [v. 1-5, Acts 4:29]

 

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

 

2. To Overcome Frailty [v. 6-13, Pr. 3:5-8]

 

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

 

3. To Overcome Folly [v. 14, Ephesians 4:30]

 

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

 

II. THE HOLY POWER OF GODLINESS

 

1.  Revealed in the Purpose of God [v. 1, 12-13a,  1 Timothy 4:7-8, 1 Thessalonians 5:19]

 

But refuse profane and old wives fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little : but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Quench not the Spirit.

 

2. Revealed in the Presence of God [v. 13, Zech. 4:6, Acts 1:8, 2 Peter 1:3]

 

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

 

3.  Revealed in the Providence of God [v. 14-22, Acts 16:6-10, Rm. 8:28, 1 Timothy 6:6]

 

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him , saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

 

III. THE HEALING POWER OF GODLY MUSIC [v. 23]

 

1. For good and for bad music affects us Physically - “so Saul was refreshed”

 

2. For good and for bad music affects us Mentally – “so Saul was refreshed, and was well”

 

3. For good and for bad music affects us Spiritually –  “so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him”
