THE WIELDER OF THE SWORD
REVELATION 2:12-17
Pastor Rick Jackson
People often have portraits done of themselves indicating
their occupation, a hobby or passion, a
prized possession or something they often use and are thus associated with that
item. In verses 1 through 11 Jesus was pictured with 7 stars in His hand but in
these verses, the Lord Jesus is portrayed as the Wielder of a sword.
In the Bible the wielder of the sword is one who had
governmental authority. In Romans 13:1-5, for instance, we are told of the
purpose of human government. Here in Revelation the Sword Wielder has higher
authority still.
1:16 also mentions the Sword. Hebrews 4:12 adds some
additional illumination. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and
sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul
and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts
and intents of the heart.
I. THE WIELDER OF THE SWORD IS AWARE [2:12]
1. Of Your Toil [2:13]
2. Of Your Situation [2:13]
3. Of Your Stand [2:13]
Just knowing what we do is known and appreciated makes a big
difference. Down through the years stories are told of soldiers that did
incredible things because of their respect for their commander. Heb. 4:12-16
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper
than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and
spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and
intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his
sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we
have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into
the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have
not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore
come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace
to help in time of need.
II. THE WIELDER OF THE TWO-EDGED SWORD IS ALERT [2:12]
1. Knows When Compromise is Made for Material Gain [2:14]
2. Knows When Compromise Causes Others to be Led Astray
[2:14]
1 Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this
liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
3. Knows When Compromise is Made with False Teachings [2:15,
1 Tm. 4:1-2]
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter
times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared
with a hot iron;
III. THE WIELDER OF THE SWORD IS ACCURATE [v. 16-17]
1. Do What He Says and Change Your Mind [v. 16]
2. Do What He Says and Change Your Manner [v. 16]
3. Do What He Says and Change Your Future [v. 17]
1 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in him; that,
when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at
his coming.
2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the
Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and
his kingdom;
2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown
of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that
day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
