CAN I GET A WITNESS?

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. A WITNESS OBSERVES:

1. What Others Do [Rm. 1:9, 1 Th. 2:10]
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

2. What Others Say [1 Th. 2:5]
For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness:

3. What Others Are [Mt. 23:31]
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

II. A WITNESS TESTIFIES: [the what]

1. What He has Done [Heb. 11:4-5]
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

2. What He Has Seen [1 Jn. 1:2, 4:14, 3 Jn. 3]
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

3. What He has Heard [Lk. 4:22]
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

III. A WITNESS TESTIFIES [the why]

1. For a Purpose [Jn. 1:7]
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

2. Of Validity [Jn. 5:31-39]
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

3. Because of a Relationship [Jn. 15:23-16:3, Acts 5:29-32]
He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
