Pastor Rick Jackson
Our Jewish friends recently observed Yom Kippur, the Day of
Atonement (covering), but they did it differently than did their ancient ancestors.
There are many reasons for this but one very important reason--- they have no
Temple nor Tabernacle whereby to keep the Divine instructions given in
Leviticus 16. Depending on what branch of Judaism they belong to the Jews of
today observe this day with some differences even among themselves. It is not
the current practices we want to look at today but rather the initial practices
given by God to the nation of Israel via Moses.
I. LESSONS FROM
LEVITICUS 16
1. The High priest and his family needed cleansing [16:1-14]
2. The Nation of Israel needed cleansing [16:15-17]
3. The Earthly Tabernacle needed cleansing [16:18-20]
4. The Atonement (covering) required animal blood sacrifice
[16:21-28]
5. The Atonement would have to be repeated annually
[16:29-34]
II. HIGHLIGHTS FROM
HEBREWS
1. The Sinless High Priest Needs No Cleansing [7:26-28]
2. The Whole World Needs Cleansing [1:1-3; 2:1-13]
3. The Heavenly Tabernacle is the Original [9:1-7, 11,
23-24]
4. The High Priest Paid With His Own Pure Blood [9:13-14]
5. The High Priest's Offering is Sufficient, Singular and
Satisfactory --- not lacking, not repeatable, never needing to be repeated
[9:9, 26; 10:1-4, 11-14]
III. FAITHFUL
COMMENTARY FROM FIRST CORINTHIANS
1. It's A Matter of Revelation [11:23-26]
2. It's A Matter of Reflection [11:27-28]
3. It's A Matter of Relationship [11:29-32]
