THE MATHEMATICS OF SIN

GENESIS 27:1-28:9

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. REBELLION MULTIPLIED [27:1-29]

We do our families no favors when any member rebels against the will of God. Better to divide families over righteousness than over unrighteousness.

Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Better yet when families unite over righteousness!

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

1. ISAAC'S POSITION TO DEFY GOD [25:23, 27:1-4]

1) Self-pity [v. 1-2]
2) Self-indulgence [v. 3-4]
3) Self-deception [v. 4]

2. REBEKAH'S PATTERN TO DEFY ISAAC [27:5-17]

1) Showed a lack of faith
2) Sad use of God-given authority
3) Supported the false idea that the end justifies the means

3. JACOB'S PATH TO DEFY ISAAC [27:11-23]

1) Did not appeal to his mother's faith [v. 11-12]
2) Did not appeal to his own faith [v. 18-23]
3) Did not appeal to his father's faith [v. 24-29]

4. ESAU'S POSITION TO DEFY AUTHORITY [27:30-41]

1) Emphasized the earthly [v. 30-34]
2) Excused the flesh [v. 35-36]
3) Entertained the Devil [v. 37-41]

Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

II. RESTORATION DIVIDED [27:33-28:9]

RESTORATION REJECTED - PATTERNS UNBROKEN/ RESTORATION RECEIVED PATTERNS BROKEN

1) Rebekah- a Christian in denial [27:42-44]

2) Issac- a Christian coming out of denial [27:33, 28:1-5]

Heb. 11:20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. [Rm. 10:17]

3) Esau- a natural man in denial [26:34-35, 28:6-9]

4) Jacob- A Christian out of defiance [28:7]
