MATTHEW 12:1-21
Rick Jackson
I. THE ACCUSATION OF THE PHARISEES [V. 1-2]
1. They said the disciples were breaking the particulars of God's provision (sabbath law) [v. 1-2]
2. The disciples were following the pattern of God's provision [Dt. 23:25]
When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.
3. The Lord Jesus knew the principle of God's provision [Jer. 29:11]
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
II. THE ANSWER OF THE LORD [V. 3-8]
1. He cited the historical books concerning David [3-4, I Sam. 21]
2. He cited the law concerning the priests [v. 5-6, Num. 28]
3. He cited the prophets concentrating on Hosea [v. 7, Hosea 6:6]
Note the Lord's familiarity with the Scriptures!
4. He cited His Divine Authority concerning His Messiahship [v. 6, 8]
III. THE PRACTICING OF WHAT HE PREACHED [V. 9-21]
1. The wicked heart of the Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus [v. 9-10]
2. The willing heart of the Lord wanted to help them all [v. 11-13, Mark 3:5]
And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
3. The wise hearted will want to follow the Saviour [v. 14-21]
