I. I USED TO BE A NORMAL PERSON – “Usta’s Gone!”

1. That Person Was Spiritually Dead [v. 1]

2. That Person’s “Lifestyle” was a “Deathstyle” [v. 2-3, Rm. 6:23]

3. That Person Did Without [v. 11-12]

 

II. WHAT WE ACTUALLY USED TO BE WAS  “NATURAL” NOT “NORMAL” – “Usta’s Gone!”

1. The Natural Man Does Not Have the Indwelling Holy Spirit [Jude 1:19]

- These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit

2. The Natural Man Does Not Have the Spiritual Insight [1 Cor. 2:14, James 3:15]

-But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

- This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

3. The Natural Man Does Not Have/Will Not Have the Spiritual Body Like Christ [1 Cor. 15:44-48, Rev. 20:6]

-There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

- Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

 

III. WHAT I USTA BE IS NOT WHAT I AM NOW [1 COR. 6:9-11] – “Usta’s Gone!”

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

 

1. I Am a New Person in Christ  [2 Corinthians 5:17]

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2. I Am Indwelt by the Holy Spirit [1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19]

-Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

-What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

3. I am a Citizen of a Heavenly City [Hebrews 12:22]

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

THE FRUITS OF GRACE

By the fruits of grace I am not just talking about salvation. Salvation IS by faith- that is certain but then the Bible says, “The JUST [that is, the saved ones] - shall live by faith.” So here is the story of three saved people- one a backslider, one a convert from heathenism, and one a Christian businessman and we see the fruits of faith in their lives.

 

I. SEEKING REST

 

1. The Instruction [3:1-5] “go to the Kinsman Redeemer”

2. The Acceptation [3:6-15] “leave it in His hands”

3. The Expectation [3:16-18] “Expect Him to see it through” compare 3:13 with Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

 

II. SEEKING RIGHTS

 

1. The Boldness [4:1-4]

2. The Business [4:5-10]

3. The Blessing [4:11-12]

 

III. SEEKING RIGHTEOUSNESS

 

1. The Conception [4:13]

2. The Conversion [4:14-17, Luke 22:32]

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

3. The Connection [4:18-22, Matthew 1:5, 16; Luke 3:23-38]

- And Salmon begat Boaz of Rachab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

- And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR SOUL

ROMANS 1

In June of 2001 an atheist on death row refused any visits by ministers and chose as his final statement the words of the 19th century poet William Ernest Henley to express his unrepentant atheism.

My head is bloody, but unbowed. …It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

To some degree I suppose there is some truth in that. People are, by God’s permission, the captain of their own soul. But what does that mean? How far will that take them? What will their end be? As is our custom, let us find the answers together in God’s Word. Consider if you will:

 

I. THE CAPTAIN’S CHOICES

 

1. He can Choose to Be an Atheist -

-but he cannot escape the consequences of his unbelief [Rm. 1:18-32]

2. He can Choose to Not Believe the Bible -

But he cannot choose to not by judged by that very same Word [John 12:48, Acts 13:46]

-He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

-Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

Men don’t really judge the Bible, the Bible judges them. You read the Bible and follow it, or the Bible condemns you. God has spoken, and this Word stands. You cannot ridicule the Word of God and get rid of it. Men have tried this. Hell will doubtless be filled with those who thought they could make light of God’s Holy Word. The Word of God must be received and believed. This is God’s Holy, infallible, dynamic message to mankind.

3. He can Choose to Not take Christ as Saviour -

But he cannot choose his fate if he rejects Christ [John 3:18, 36]

-He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

-He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Indeed, a ship’s captain may plot a course, but he cannot control elements beyond his control- rocks, weather, enemy ships, obstructions, etc. Ask Edward Smith- Captain of the Titanic.

 

II. THE CAPTAIN’S CAPTAIN

 

What if the captain, seeing the way is treacherous, decides to turn the helm over to a better Captain? A captain who has sailed these seas, conquered the obstructions and the enemies and actually has control over the weather. Where could we find such a One? Ah, look to Jesus- the captain’s Captain.

 

1. Captain of the Lord’s Host [Joshua 5:13-15]

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

2. Master of the Seas [Mk. 4:37-41]

And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

3. Captain of Our Salvation [Heb. 2:3-10]

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

 

III. THE CAPTAIN’S COMMANDS

 

Having placed the helm at His control- the wise person would then obey His commands- knowing they were for the good of the vessel. What commands has He given?

 

1. Occupy [Lk 19:10-13ff]

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. [pragmateuomai,  to busy oneself with]

 

2. Be Faithful [1 Corinthians 4:2]

Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

 

3. Keep Watch [1 Corinthians 16:13]

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

DOING RIGHT THE RIGHT WAY!

2 KINGS 18:1-8

I. THE SANCTIFICATION OF DOING RIGHT [v. 1-6]

1. Pattern your Life Appropriately [v. 1-3, Philippians 3:17; 1 Peter 2:21]

- Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

- For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

-I will cleave to the old rugged cross, and exchange it one day for a crown.

III. THE SATISFACTION OF DOING RIGHT [v. 7-8]

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

- And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2. The Prosperity of the Lord [v. 7b, Joshua 1:7-8]

- Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

1. We Have God  our Father in Common [Colossians 1:1-2]

PAUL, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. We Have Christ our Saviour in Common [1 Timothy 2:5, 2 Peter 1:1]

-For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

- Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

3. We Have the Holy Ghost our Comforter [John 14:16, 26; 15:26, 16:7]

-And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

-But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

-But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

-Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

1. We Have the Throne of Grace [Hebrews 4:14-16]

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

2. We Have The Kingdom of Heaven [Matthew 8:11]

And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

3. We Have the Father’s House [John 14:1-6]

-Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way , the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

THE BIBLE AND THE TRINITY

THE BIBLE AND THE TRINITY                      

MATTHEW 28:16-20

One great Bible doctrine that confuses many of the cults is the doctrine of the Trinity. Any group that denies the Trinity is a group you want no part of. Someone may say, “But I don’t understand it.” John R. Rice once said, “The things you don’t understand would fill a mighty big book.” There is a lot that is true that you and I don’t understand- but that doesn’t make it any less true. The Word of God is True, and the Word of God teaches the Trinity.

 

I. THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD

 

1. So Says the Law [Dt. 4:35, 6:4]

- Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him.

-Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

 

2. So Says the Prophets [Is. 43:10-11, 44:6]

- Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.

-Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

 

3. So Says the Saviour [Mark 12:28-30]

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

 

II. THERE ARE THREE PERSONS IN THIS ONE GOD

 

1. The Word “One” in these Passages refer to a Compound Unity [Gn. 2:24, 11:6, Jn. 17:22, Gal. 3:28]

- Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

- And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

- And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

- There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

 

2. God Uses Plural Pronouns referring to Himself [Gn. 1:26, 3:22, Is. 6:8]

- And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

- And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

- Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

 

3. The New Testament often refers to the Trinity [Mt. 3:16-17, Eph. 4:4-6, 2 Cor. 13:14]

- And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

- There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

-The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

 

III. GOD IS ESSENTIALLY ONE AND IS ALSO THREE

1. God is Spirit [Jn. 4:24]

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

2. God is Infinite [Ps. 147:5, Numbers 23:19, Isaiah 40:18-31]

-Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

- God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

3. God is a Trinity [Mt. 28:19] physical example- H20- water=liquid, steam=vapor, ice=solid

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
