I. THE DAY COMETH [v. 1-3]
1. THE DAY OF FIRE [v. 1, 2 Thess. 1:7-10]
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord
Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire
taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our
Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the
presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be
glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because
our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
2. THE DAY OF FEAR [v. 2, 3:16, 2 Pet. 1:19, Proverbs 14:26]
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well
that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day
dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his
children shall have a place of refuge.
3. THE DAY OF FEET [v. 3, Ez. 39]
II. THE TIME TO REMEMBER [v. 4-6, Ecclesiastes 12:1]
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth,
while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I
have no pleasure in them;
1. THE PROOF OF SIN [v. 4, Romans 3:20]
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be
justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
2. THE PROPHET OF HOPE [v. 5, 3:1-3, Isaiah 58:14]
Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will
cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the
heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
3. THE POWER OF FAITH [v. 6, Lk. 1:16-17]
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the
Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of
Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient
to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
III. THE LORD OF HOSTS [v. 1-6]
1. GOD IS HOLY [v. 1-4]
2. GOD IS MERCIFUL [v. 5]
3. GOD IS GRACIOUS [v. 6]
The final word in the Old Testament is "curse",
the New testament opens with the story of the One who will remove the curse.
Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law
are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not
in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the
law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that
hangeth on a tree:
