THE ATTACK
Pastor Rick Jackson
Franklin D. Roosevelt's Infamy Speech- December 8, 1941
Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in
infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by
naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at
the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its
Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one
hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island
of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague
delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American
message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the
existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of
armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from
Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or
even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has
deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and
expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused
severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that
very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been
reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack
against Malaya. Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night
Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine
Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island and this morning the
Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive
extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak
for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their
opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of
our nation.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, I have
directed that all measures be taken for our defense.
But always will our whole nation remember the character
of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this
premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win
through to absolute victory.
I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and
of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the
uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never
again endanger us.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that
our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding
determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us
God.
I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked
and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December seventh, 1941 a state of war
has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire."
Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the
wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the
harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
Acts 13:10 And said, O full of all subtlety and all
mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou
not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.
I. THE CHARACTER OF THE ATTACK
1. It was an Unexpected Attack [John 13:2]
And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the
heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
2. It was an Expected Attack [1 Peter 5:8]
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as
a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
3. It was a Deceitful Attack [John 8:44]
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your
father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the
truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of
his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
II. THE CAUSE OF THE ATTACK [what did/does the enemy
hope to gain by the attack?]
1. It was meant to Discourage (demoralize) [1 Timothy 3:7]
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are
without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
2. It was meant to Disable [Luke 22:31]
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired
to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
3. It was meant to Destroy [Ephesians 6:11]
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil.
III. THE COST OF THE ATTACK
1. It was Critical [2 Timothy 2:26]
And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the
devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
2. It was Catastrophic [Luke 8:12]
Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the
devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe
and be saved.
3. It was Conquered [Hebrews 2:14]
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and
blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he
might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you.
