Pastor Rick Jackson
There are assumptions about the wise men that can be
dispelled with a simple reading of the scripture. For instance, they were not
at the stable and they weren't necessarily limited to three. There are likewise
many truths that can be gathered about them from the same texts. They spent a
great deal of time and resources to find Jesus, they realized He was more than
just a man, they obeyed the Lord's instructions in various matters, etc. You
can be wise this season too. While you won't be following a star to Bethlehem
the Bible reveals how to be wise.
I. THE FIRST WISE
MAN: THE SAVED MAN!
1. Hears the Word of God [Mt. 7:24]
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth
them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
2. Heeds the Word of God [Mt. 7:24-25]
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a
wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the
floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for
it was founded upon a rock.
3. Believes on the Lord Jesus Christ [1 Pt. 2:1-11]
II. THE SECOND WISE
MAN: THE SOUL WINNER!
1. Jesus Came to Seek and to Save [Lk. 19:10]
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which
was lost.
2. Jesus Commissioned Us to Do the Same Thing [Jn. 20:21-23]
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my
Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed
on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye
remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are
retained.
3. Jesus Commends the Soul Winner as Wise [Proverbs 11:30, Daniel 12:3]
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that
winneth souls is wise.
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the
firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and
ever.
III. THE THIRD WISE
MAN: THE UNDERSTANDING MAN [Dan. 12:9-13]
1. He Understands the Past. [Hebrews 11:3]
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by
the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do
appear.
2. He Understands the Present [Colossians 2:2]
That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in
love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the
acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
3. He Understands the Future. [Ephesians 1:18, Mark 13:14]
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye
may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of
his inheritance in the saints,
But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken
of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth
understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
