Questions?

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals
Luke 20:40  "And after that they durst not ask him any question at all."

Questions?

People often ask questions when they really don't want an answer.  For instance, there is the rhetorical question.  Ronald Reagan asked during the 1980 election campaign, "Are you better off now than you were eight years ago?"  Mr. Reagan wasn't looking for an answer; he wanted the American people to understand his point.

Then there is the loaded question.  Imagine if I asked you the following question: "Did it make you feel good to run over my cat?"  Friend, you can't win that, no matter what you answer!

A chief tool in the arsenal of any rebel is stating a question.  You can sow more discord by asking a question than by making a statement.  Maybe you don't like it that Sunday school starts at 9:30 AM each week.  You can either be forthcoming and tell the preacher, "I don't like Sunday School starting at 9:30!", or you can start a small insurrection by asking your neighbor in the pew, "Why does Sunday School have to be at 9:30?"  You are not looking for an answer; you are looking for a fight!

What is it that you want from your question?  Do you want an answer, or do you want an argument?  You will get whatever you are looking for!  Luke chapter 20 is a good example of the loaded questions religious leaders fired at the Lord Jesus.  They tried to put Christ in a dilemma by asking, "Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?"  Christ perceived their "craftiness" in trying to tempt Him.

Asking questions is not wrong.  (I have asked quite a few this morning.)  But in asking a question, are you trying to "score" or trying to learn?  Stop sparring and start asking!  You don't have to live life grasping onto falsehoods; you can grab ahold of the answers God gladly gives us in His Word.  The answer to your question will be no better than the person you ask and the heart with which you ask.
