THE PRACTICAL POWER OF JESUS

MATTHEW 12:1-14

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE ACCUSATION OF THE PHARISEES [v. 1-2]

1. The Allowance of the Lord [v. 1] He surely knew they were hungry

2. The Dinner of the Disciples [v. 1]

3. The Perversion of the Pharisees [v. 2]

II. THE ANSWER OF THE LORD [v. 3-8]

1. He Cited the Historical Books Concerning David [v. 3-4, 1 Sam. 21]

2. He Cited the Law Pentateuch Concerning the Priests [v. 5-6, Num. 28:9-10]

And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof: This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.

3. He Cited the Prophets Concentrating on Hosea [v. 7, Hosea 6:6]

For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

4. He Cited His Authority Concerning His Deity [v. 6, 8; Gen. 2:1-3]

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

III. THE PRACTICING OF WHAT HE PREACHED [v. 9-14]

1. The Pharisees Tried to Trap Jesus [v. 10]

2. The Profit Margin Explained [v. 11-13, James 4:17]

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

3. The Pharisees Dilemma [v. 14]

-they couldn’t argue with the Scriptures Jesus gave

-they couldn’t argue with the Logic Jesus used

-they wouldn’t agree with Jesus

-they resorted to violence
