Unearthing Gospel Traces in Ancient Egyptian Religion
Ancient Egyptian Religion
Egyptians were quite conscious of their sinful hearts and recognized the threat their guilty hearts posed to their chances for eternal bliss. There were elements in the Egyptian religion that predisposed Egyptians two millennia ago to understand both their need for Christ and God's plan of salvation. What made Egyptians some of the most receptive people to the gospel once it came to them?

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

The sweet Word of God. What are you going to do with it? I would set out to learn it. I would read it. I would teach it diligently to my children. I would have the blessing of it. I hope you will. - John R. Rice

You ought to have the Bible in your heart. I wonder how many of you know a lot of Scriptures by heart? How many of you have the general sense of it, the moral standards of it, and the Christ of it in your heart? - John R. Rice

Jesus Christ was for the inspiration of the whole Bible and He quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3. In Matthew 4:4 Jesus said, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." And now He says you are to teach this to your children. Teach it diligently, He said. Oh, that doesn't mean casually. - John R. Rice

Do you teach the Word of God diligently to your children? You are not going to do that unless you set a time for it, unless it is regularly scheduled, unless it is big business.
Talk about it, the Scripture says here, "when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." Yes, and when you mow the lawn and wash the dishes and wash the car, and watch TV the rest of the time. Talk about the Bible. Teach it diligently to your children. - John R. Rice

Oh, you don't have to let the Devil have your children. You hear, "Well, you can't tell how kids are going to turn out." Mrs. Rice and I made up our minds we would turn them out ourselves; that we would not leave it up to the public schools and the newspapers and the TV and the radio and the high school crowd. We would teach them ourselves. The Bible says, "Teach them diligently unto thy children." You can. God blessed it in our family and He will bless you. - John R. Rice

There is a promise in Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." There is no way to train them up in the way they should go except you go by the Bible and take time to teach them the Bible. Teach it diligently to your children. - John R. Rice

Jesus said in the Beatitudes, "Blessed are the poor. . ." (Matt. 5:3), and again, "Blessed be ye poor" (Luke 6:20).
In the first place, there are more poor people than rich people. And He came for the mass of troubled, sinning, condemned humanity. In some sense, every mortal in the world is poor. The richest man cannot buy one breath or one heartbeat or one day of peace. So long as the richest man thinks of himself as rich and having need of nothing, he will not find blessing in Jesus; but when he knows how poor he is, he will see that he is included. - John R. Rice

RELATIONSHIP PRINCIPLES FOR PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS

COLOSSIANS 3:18-4:1

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. PRINCIPLES FOR THE HEAVENLY HOME [v. 18-21]

"The strength of a nation is derived from the integrity of its homes." -Confucius

The Healthy Home is a home with:

1. WILLING SUBMISSION NOT FORCED SUBJECTION [v. 18]

-"submission" here means to rank under, a Sgt. may rank under a Lt. while being an equal or better man, God does all things decently and in order (I Cor. 14:40)

-the husband isn't perfect but God is!

-this willing submission among equals is used to picture Christ willing submitting to the Father (Eph. 5) though they are both equals (Phil. 2)

2. BE LOVING NOT BITTER [v. 19]

-"bitter" means harsh and unkind

-the wife is not perfect but God is!

-the word for love is a form of "agape", the same word used in Jn. 3:16

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

3. OBEDIENCE NOT ORNERYNESS [v. 20]

-parents aren't perfect but God is! (Eph. 6:1)

"For the most part children do not create problems; they reveal them." W.W. Wiersbe

-Honor as well as obey in the Lord

4. INSIGHTFUL NOT INCITING [v. 21]

-"pater" translated father here is translated parents in Heb. 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment

-children aren't perfect but God is!

-assumes points -1 thru 3 are in order

-Parents should strive not to chasten in anger

-are their efforts ever good enough for you?

"Parents often change their minds and create problems for their children, sometimes by swinging from extreme permissiveness to extreme legalism." -Wiersbe

-In every church I have pastored there have been parents who punished their children by NOT letting them go to church or some other spiritual activity (the very place they might learn how to better behave). Parents that have done this are hurting themselves in several ways.

"But they disobeyed me." or "They disappointed me." Are you raising them for yourself or for the Lord?

Psalm 127:3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Malachi 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

"The spirit of a young child is to be carefully and tenderly developed. One cannot crush the spirit of a child with harshness and lack of understanding, and expect that child to develop into a gracious, Christian lady or gentleman. With caution, a tender twig can be bent and shaped; but hasty, rude bending will warp or brake such tender growth." -Oliver B. Greene

"If Dad is unavailable, he should work on his schedule. If he is inaccessible, he should work on his attitude." -James T. Dyet

II. PRINCIPLES FOR THE WISE WORKPLACE [3:22-4:1]

These were originally laid down for a society with slaves and masters. Paul was not approving slavery but giving God's guidelines for a situation that existed. That's what the Bible does. It touches where people live, where the rubber meets the road. But from this we can glean some principles for the workplace in our day. Just be careful not to try to make this walk on all fours in your place of business.

1. EMPLOYEE- BE A GOD PLEASER! (v. 22-25)

"It is a sin to do less than your best!" -Bob Jones Sr.

2. BOSS- BE A GOD PLEASER! (3:25-4:1)

Oliver B. Greene thinks 3:25 in context relates to bosses. Of course, the principle applies to everyone!

III. GENERAL PRINCIPLES

We have no power over the hearts of others but we can get right ourselves!

1. GIVE OUR BEST TO THE LORD AT HOME!

2. GIVE OUR BEST TO LORD AT WORK!

3. GIVE OUR BEST TO THE LORD AT ALL TIMES!

WILL THE CHURCH GO THROUGH THE GREAT TRIBULATION?

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Revelation 7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Pastor Rick Jackson

When we talk about the millennium we call ourselves by three possible names. A "premillennialist" believes Christ will come back before the millennium, a postmillennialist believes Christ will return after the millennium, while an amillennialist says, "Aw, there ain't gonna be no millennium." Make no mistake about it- I am a premillennialist. I am a premillennial Christian because I believe that's what the Bible teaches. I came to this doctrine with no preconceived ideas (I was not raised a fundamental, Bible-believing Baptist-I came to be one through salvation and conviction from studying the Scriptures) and I am convinced this is what the Bible teaches!

You can be a premillennialist and still be a post-tribulationist. Or you can be a premillennialist and be a mid-tribulationist. Or you can be right and be a pre-tribulational premillennialist. At least that's the way I like to think of it. I have reasons I believe that is right and I want to share just a few of them with you now from the Word of God.

I am a pre-tribulational, premillennialist because:

I. OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE IMMINENT RAPTURE

1 Cor. 1:4-7 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

1 Thess. 1:9-10 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Thessalonians 4:15 this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep

Titus 2:11-13 the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Note that in all these verses we are to look for His coming, not the tribulation. I am a pre-tribulational, premillennialist because:

II. WE ARE PROMISED DELIVERANCE FROM WRATH [1 Th. 1:9-10, 5:2-9]

Rom. 5:8-9 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Rev. 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Rev. 6:12-17 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

We are promised deliverance from God's wrath and though the primary emphasis may be the lake of fire it cannot be denied that the Great Tribulation is designated as the wrath of the Lamb!

There are a few who may believe in a "Pre-Wrath Rapture - the church will go through the great tribulation by Antichrist during the end times, but will be raptured immediately before the 'Day of the Lord' wrath, when Christ cuts short the persecution of Antichrist." This mid-tribulation view may be better than the post-trib. view but it is still not as good as the pre-trib. view as we shall continue to explain.

Others believe in a "Partial Rapture - only those who are faithful in the church will be raptured or translated and the rest will either be raptured sometime during the tribulation or at its end." This could better be called the rupture of the church since they believe some will go through the tribulation and some won't. I am going to be raptured because of Christ's faithfulness... not mine!

I am a pre-tribulational, premillennialist because:

III. THE CHURCH ISN'T MENTIONED IN REVELATION 6-19 (WHICH DEALS WITH THE TRIBULATION PERIOD IN DETAIL)

Rev. 1-3 mentions "church" or "churches" almost 20 times, then you will not find the church mentioned again by name until 22:16. Many scholars believe Rev. 4:1 is a picture of the Rapture (compare that with 1 Th. 4:16-17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord).

"This is a definite statement concerning the rapture. When anyone tells you the word rapture is not in the Bible, remember that the Greek word for 'caught up' is harpazo; it means 'caught up, raptured, or snatched up.' ... If you don't like the word rapture then call it harpazo. That's what Paul called it. We are to be caught up, and His voice will be like a trumpet. It pulled John up, and someday it will pull you and me up." -J. Vernon McGee

The church returns with the Lord in Rev. 19:7-9

I am a pre-tribulational, premillennialist because:

IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S RESTRAINING MINISTRY THROUGH CHRISTIANS MUST BE REMOVED [2 Th. 2:3-9, Mt. 5:13-16]

I am a pre-tribulational, premillennialist because:

V. OF THE MANY EXAMPLES OF GOD'S DELIVERING HIS CHILDREN BEFORE PUNISHING THE UNGODLY [2 Peter 2:1-9]

Noah was delivered before the flood, Lot (am unfaithful Christian at best) was delivered from Sodom & Gommorha and the church will be delivered “saved” from the wrath to come.

Question of the Week: Is the Brontosaurus back, and why does it matter?

Brontosaurus: The Only Dino to Go Extinct Twice
If you've seen any of the Land Before Time or Jurassic Park films, you're familiar with the general appearance of the Brontosaurus. It's the long-necked, elephant-bodied, lizard-tailed, leaf-eating dino that grazed in green valleys, living peaceably with other animals and, we would add, humans.

Brontosaurus is a genus of the sauropod family Diplodocidae with similar shape and form, in particular, to another diplodocid, Apatosaurus. So similar, in fact, that the Brontosaurus has caused quite a bit of confusion.

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

I wonder dear friend, do you know Jesus as personal Saviour? How foolish not to read the Bible! How foolish not to believe any part of it! By neglect you let Satan work wicked things in your heart. But I would turn to love the Lord Jesus, to read the Bible, to study it, to follow it, to delight in the Word of God. That is the way of peace, joy, and happiness. Oh, I hope you will. - John R. Rice

I have a watch. Some ignoramus says, "Nobody made a watch; it just accidently happened. Parts got together. First, it was a checker then it was a button, then it was, after while, a steam gauge, then it got to be a watch. With twelve points there and the hand going around every second from one point to another, sixty seconds in an hour, and the minute hand going around and the hour hand going from one hour to another." You say, "It just happened."
You don't believe that. You are a fool if you do. A world with no World Maker, a universe and nobody planned it! Man and no Man Maker! I am saying anyone who believes that is crazy, foolish, wicked and blinded in sin. - John R. Rice

If we are taking the Bible standard, we must do away with this murder of a million innocent unborn babies each year. God will hold people to account. There is a holy God who will hold men to account for their sins. If the Bible is true, and if Christ is the Son of God, and if Jesus Christ is on the throne, then you can know that nobody gets by with sin. - John R. Rice

What can a Christian do about his Bible? First, he is to read it. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." A Christian ought to read every word in the Bible. I think he ought to read every word of it every year. At least read the Bible through. If you read four chapters a day, in about eleven months you will have read the Bible through, then you can start over. I wouldn't do less than that, surely. - John R. Rice

Read the Bible. And what else should one do about it? Oh, I would set out to enjoy it, to delight in the Bible, to stand for it. I settled this thing a long time ago. I have lost many a friend because I said, "I will follow the Bible, wherever and whatever God says." I have set out to do it. I have lost the friends of a lifetime. I would do it again. But, thank God, I am keeping the peace of God and assurance, and the Bible says He knows those who are His. You can be sure God will raise up other friends if you do right and stand by the Bible and love it. - John R. Rice

What will the Bible do for you? First, it is the way to get saved. "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever." Born again by the Word of God. - John R. Rice

Once I was reading through the Gospel of Matthew and I came to the genealogy of the Lord Jesus: "So-and-so begat So-and-so, and he begat So-and-so," etc. I felt a little bored of this, having read that so many times. Suddenly God seemed to speak to me. "That is My Word you are feeling bored about!" And I asked the Lord to forgive me and I told Him I would preach on that the next Sunday morning. So I went through the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew, and that in Luke and, oh, wha...t blessing! Glory came down to fill our souls as we found Jesus Son of the kings and paupers, Jesus, Son of Adam, Son of Abraham, Son of David; Jesus from Bathsheba, from Ruth the Moabitess, and from Rahab the harlot, and from others. Oh, Jesus represents all mankind, that genealogy shows us.
There are no uninteresting parts of the Bible; but there are just some uninterested Christians. - John R. Rice
