GENESIS 6:1-7
Pastor Rick Jackson
I. WHO ARE THE "SONS OF GOD" IN GENESIS 6:1-4?
1. SOME GOOD CHRISTIANS THINK THEY ARE FALLEN ANGELS
Here are there main arguments:
-angels are called sons of God in Job 1:6, 38:7
-giants were produced by these demons & women [Gn. 6:4]
-angels are chained for this sin [II Pt. 2:4, Jude 6]
2. SOME GOOD CHRISTIANS THINK THEY AREN'T FALLEN ANGELS
-good, not fallen, angels are the ones called sons of god
-people of faith are called sons of God [Jn. 1:12, Gal. 4:4-7]
-Bible doesn't say the giants were offspring of this union but that they existed at the time. Substitute the word "mountains" and see how it still makes sense.
-"mighty men" were the resulting offspring (fresh DNA strands}
-giants exist later without "angelic" help [I Chr. 20:4-8, I Sm. 17=Goliath]
-Jesus said angels don't marry (why would God give them reproductive abilities if He did not intend for them to reproduce- I Cor. 14:33)
-Bible doesn't name the sin in Jude & II Peter, it could easily be something else
3. THE BIBLE CLEARLY TEACHES THE "SONS OF GOD" ARE SETHITES
"A text without a context is a pretext". What is the context of Genesis 6:1-4?
-Gn. 4:16-24....... gives Cain's line
-Gn. 4:25-5:32 ...gives Seth's line
-Gn. 6:1-7............gives the mixed line of Cain & Seth and the results of unbridled carnality
-note how men are blamed for this offense [v. 3, 5, 6, 7] and fallen angels aren't dealt with like 3:14-15
-becuase marriages were based on appearance instead of spirituality the godly dwindled down to one man and his family [v. 2, 8]
II. WHY DESTROY THE WHOLE WORLD?
1. Many were committing the unpardonable sin [v. 3]
2. Many were becoming famous for their wickedness [v. 4]
3. Majority were no longer even giving mental assent to God [v. 5]
-Ten people could have spared Sodom but eight weren't enough to spare the wicked world.
III. DOES GOD REPENT?
1. In the strictest sense God doesn't change His mind [v. 6-7]
Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent:
1 Samuel 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
2. God changes the way He responds to man according to what man does [1 Samuel 15:11]
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night
3. God's patience can eventually run out [Jeremiah 15:6]
Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.
