WHY CAN’T WE SERVE GOD THE WAY WE WANT?

NUMBERS 16:1-11

Pastor Rick Jackson

I knew a woman that wanted to become a preacher, so she divorced her husband, left her family, went to cemetery, er, seminary, and got her liberal denomination to ordain her. When I was surprised at this turn of events some professing Christians questioned, “why can’t she serve God the way she wants?” Well, there are at least 3 reasons why we can’t serve God the way WE want.

I. WE CAN’T SERVE GOD THE WAY WE WANT BECAUSE OF OTHERS

1. Timing -Joseph’s Brothers [Gn. 50:20]

- But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

2. Training –“Not a novice” Paul, Barnabas and John Mark

3. Tribulation –Apostles [Acts 5:17-20]

-Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

II. WE CAN’T SERVE GOD THE WAY WE WANT BECAUSE OF OURSELVES

1. Sin Disqualifies Some [1 Tm. 3:1-7]

2. Standards Discourage Some [1 Tm. 3:1-7]

3. Self Diverts Some [Jonah, Moses, Peter]

III. WE CAN’T SERVE GOD THE WAY WE WANT BECAUSE OF GOD

1. It Must Be God’s Way [2 Sam. 6, 1 Chr. 15:2]

Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the Lord chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.

2. It Must be According to God’s Word [Num. 20:7-12]

3. It Must Be God’s Will [1 Tm. 2:12-15] some jobs are for certain people

BASICALLY, IT’S NOT ABOUT US, IT’S ABOUT HIM.

I HAVE A MESSAGE FROM GOD UNTO THEE

JUDGES 3:12-22

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. NOTE THE PARTICULARS

1. It Is A Personal Message [v. 19-20]

-Be sure your sin will find you out.

- The soul that sinneth, it shall die.

-Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…

-Come unto me all ye that labor..

- Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature

It may be a universal message, but it is personal.

2. It Is A Powerful Message [v. 21-22]

- He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

- And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore

- I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;

3. It Is A Permanent Message [v. 23-25]

- He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

- And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

II. NOTE THE PERSON – This is not “our” truth, it is His Truth

1. It is God’s Judgment [Rm. 6:23] The wages of sin is death

2. It is God’s Justice [Psalms 89:14, Is. 9:7]

-Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

3. It is God’s “Justness” [Isaiah 43:15, 2 Tm. 2:13, Rm. 3:26]

- If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

-I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

- To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

III. NOTE THE PRIORITIES

1. It is a Message of Choice [v. 12-14, Hebrews 11:31]

By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

2. It is a Message of Christ [3:14, Ruth 1:16-22]

3. It is a Message of Consequence [Hebrews 4:1-3a]

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest

THE MVP THAT SURPRISED A NATION

1 SAMUEL 17

Pastor Rick Jackson

Here we have an early “Superbowl”. The teams consisting of the Philistine Raiders [v. 1, 3-7] playing against the underdogs, the Israelite Sheep [v. 2, 11, 24]. The stakes of course were much higher than any current Superbowl’s as this was for [v. 8-10] more than bragging rights, money, super-bowl rings or trips to Disneyworld.

The early high expectations for “Most Valuable Player” were on Goliath [v. 4] who even had his agent with him [v. 7]. But the surprise MVP was a walk-on [v. 12-15], a youth [v. 33], who was somewhat inexperienced [v. 33, 38, 39]. How did he become the MVP for this early historical, Biblical super bowl?

I. HE HAD A HEART FOR GOD

1. He believed that God is bigger than an uncircumcised Philistine [v. 26]

2. He believed that God is real [v. 26b]

3. He believed that God is worthy [v. 29] the question is not “is it worth it?” the question is “is He worthy?”

II. HE HAD A SPIRIT OF FAITH

1. He believed God Had [v. 32-35]

2. He believed God Could [v. 36-37]

3. He believed God Would [v. 43-47]

III. HE HAD A YIELDED WILL

1. He Believed in spite of “friendly” opposition [v. 28-29, 33]

2. He Believed in spite of “expert advice” [v. 38-40]

3. He Believed in spite of an “overconfident enemy” [v. 41-51]

How’s your heart? How is your spirit? How is your will?

BIBLE FAITH IS NOT ...

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. BIBLE FAITH IS NOT ILLOGICAL [Acts 17:2, 18:4, 19, 24:24-25]

-And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

-And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

- And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

- And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance , and judgment to come , Felix trembled , and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

1. It is Logical to Believe Creation Requires a Creator [Rm. 1:20-22]

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

2. It is Logical to Believe a God that Cannot Lie [Titus 1:2, 1 Peter 3:15]

-In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

- But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

3. It is Logical to believe a Book Inspired by a God that Cannot Lie [2 Tm. 3:15-17]

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.   All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works

II. BIBLE FAITH IS NOT COMFORTABLE [Heb. 11:13, 25, 35-40]

1.  It is Not Comfortable to Fight the Flesh [James 4:1-3]

2. It is Not Comfortable to Fight the World [James 4:4-6]

3. It is Not Comfortable to Fight the Devil [James 4:7-10]

No, it is not comfortable, but, it is right.

III. BIBLE FAITH IS NOT NEGOTIABLE [Heb. 11:6]

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

1. Salvation is by Faith – period! [Rm. 11:6, Gal. 2:16]

- And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

- Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

2. Sanctification is by Faith [Jn. 17:17, Ephesians 5:26]

- Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

- That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word

3. (Acceptable) Service is by Faith [Rm. 12:1-3]

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly , according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE KEEPER OF SALVATION [2 Tm. 1]

1. He is Worthy [v. 8-12]

2. He is Able [v. 10, 12, 1 Peter 1:5]

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

3. He is Willing [v. 12-18]

II. THE KEEPER OF PEACE [Isaiah 26]

1. The Giver of Peace [v. 1, 3-5, 11-12]

2. The Quality of Peace [v. 1-3, John 14:27]

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

3. The Condition of Peace [v.3-4]
