Wise Men Still Seek Him

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals
Matthew 2:1-2  "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."

What made the wise men "wise"?  Did they have lists of college degrees after their names?  Were they the most popular men of their day?  Were they successful businessmen or entrepreneurs?  Certainly, the title of "wise men" had some qualification; they did not just hand out titles like that to everyone.  However, what made these men wise is the fact that they had the courage to act and the courage to ask.

The truth is, if you are not willing to act, you are not able to see.  If a person does not come to God's revelation with a willingness to act, he will not have an ability to see.  Wisdom is not so much what you know; wisdom is what you do.  That is why there are so many "foolish" intelligent people today.  There has never been a day with more knowledge but less understanding than our day!

There were other people at the time of Christ's birth that knew He would come but rejected Him.  Herod and the scribes knew exactly where Christ would be born.  "And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet. . . ."  What was the difference between the scribes and the wise men?  The wise men were willing to act on what they knew.

The other quality that made these wise men "wise" is their willingness to ask.  Will Rogers famously said, "We are all ignorant, only on different subjects."  We are all smart in some areas and ignorant in other areas.  Never get so smart that you fail to ask.  If you are not willing to learn from people, even flawed people, then you will not learn.  Although all men are flawed, God's perfect Word is not.  Even a flawed man with a perfect Book can be wise.

God used a star to guide the wise men.  He used a dream to warn the wise men.  He even used unbelieving scribes.  The only way to get wisdom like these wise men is to be willing to act and willing to ask.  Wise men do still seek Him.  Are you a wise person?
