We make a big deal of the Bible. We encourage people to read
the Bible and to study the Bible. Why should we study a book that is 1900 years
old in its youngest parts and probably 2000 years older than that in its oldest
part- besides the fact that it is more up-to-date than tomorrow’s newspaper,
more relevant than todays’ headlines, and more important than any other
document on earth- why should we study the Bible? As Paul wrote to Timothy, the
last book of the 14 he wrote he is led by the Holy Spirit to give us some
insight on this subject. He tells his protégé and us what God wants us to do:
v. 1 – be strong…
v. 2 – be committed…
v. 3 – endure hardness…
v. 4 – be focused…
v. 5 – strive lawfully…
v. 6 – be a partaker… [Not “do as I say not as I do”]
v. 7 – consider…
v. 8 – remember…
v. 9 – the Word of God is not bound…
v. 10 – endure all things…
v. 11-13 – it’s not about us…
So - WHY STUDY THE
BIBLE?
1. It is Profitable [v. 14, 3:16]
2. It is Commanded [v. 15a]
3. To Be Approved by God [v. 15, Eph. 5:10]
4. To Be a Worker instead of a Shirker [v. 15, 1 Pet. 3:15]
5. To Not Be Ashamed {v. 15, 1 Jn. 2:29]
6. To Rightly Understand the Bible [v. 15, Heb. 4:12]
7. To Avoid False Teachings & Related Sins [v. 16,
3:4-7, 2 Jn. 9-10]
