Joshua 14:7 "Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart."
What Do You See?
Isn't it interesting how people see what they are looking for? Isn't it interesting how you only see what you want to see? Think back to the last time you were driving a new car, either new or new-to-you. You probably started noticing all the cars just like yours! Was your car taking over the world? No! You were simply seeing what you were looking for!
The truth that you see what you are looking for is apparent in Joshua 14. Caleb, who was now an old man, said to Joshua, "Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart." In other words, Caleb saw what he was looking for! He expected that God would make good on His promise to give them the Promised Land; so he saw what was there to conquer, not what would keep from conquering.
In contrast, the other spies with their evil report "made the heart of the people melt." They only saw the obstacles standing in the way of conquest. Because Caleb "wholly followed the LORD," it affected everything he saw-even when there were great obstacles. Caleb's complete dedication and heart for the Lord made it possible to say in verse 12, "Now therefore give me this mountain." He still believed in God's promise of a land, and he was willing to obey.
The same is true for you today. You will see whatever you have a heart to see! In your life, what you will possess in age depends on what you choose in youth. Victory or defeat, opportunities or obstacles, obedience or rebellion--the choice is up to you! In addition, what you will see in age depends on what you anticipate in youth. Caleb's strength didn't wear down because his vision didn't either! He both looked back and looked forward. What do you see this morning? Well, that will depend on what you are looking for!
