Colossians 3:22 "Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:"
Serving God or Men?
Do you care what people think? Sometimes a person will boastfully say, "I don't care what anyone thinks!" I'm sorry, but I don't buy that! And, if it were true, I don't think I would want to be around him! All of us care what people think. The better question this morning is, whose favor are you most concerned with cultivating?
You are not serving God if you are not serving men. God calls the authorities He has placed over you "masters according to the flesh." The authorities we are to obey have hides and bones! It is easy for a rebel to talk of obeying someone that no one sees; it is another matter to obey the boss he can see. You are not obeying a God you cannot not see if you do not obey the authority you can see.
Likewise, you are not serving God if you are only serving men. The Bible continues by saying, "Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God." It is possible to please everyone around you, including your pastor, boss, and teachers, but not be right with God. I think every Christian probably wants to please God; but if my work comes down to "eyeservice" and pleasing men only, something is wrong.
When you boil it all down, you serve the Lord. You cannot serve God without serving men, and you cannot serve God by only serving men. Today, whose favor will you strive to gain?
"Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh . . . and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."
