Isaiah 53 is the equivalent of a mountain peak in the Word of God: you can see it coming and going. You can see it coming in Genesis, and you can look in the rearview mirror and see it in Revelation. It is a mountain peak in the Bible because it speaks of a mountain peak in history. The Lord Jesus and what He has done for us is the very epicenter of all that has happened and will happen. The suffering servant in Isaiah 53 is not talking about a nation-it is referring to the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, who suffered for our sin.
I love reading this chapter of the Bible. It is too good to simply skim over. When you read Isaiah 53, pay particular attention to the references to our sorrows, Christ's stripes, and God's satisfaction. Justice says, "Our sin-our suffering." God's grace and provision spoken of in Isaiah 53 says, "Our sin-Christ's suffering." That is an amazing thing!

"Despised . . . rejected of men . . . man of sorrows . . . stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted . . . wounded . . . bruised . . . stripes . . . oppressed . . . afflicted . . . travail"
"We are healed . . . it pleased the LORD to bruise him . . . the pleasure of the LORD . . . and shall be satisfied"
Why don't you read Isaiah 53 right now! These are epic verses! Our sins were given to Christ, and God's righteousness was given to us. Our heritage as servants of God is "their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD" (Isaiah 54:17b), and it is worth remembering that today.
