Mark 15:43-45
Adapted from
Hyman Appelman by Pastor Rick Jackson
I. WHAT
WAS A CENTURION?
1. A Man of
Accomplishment [Acts 23:23, captain of 100 men]
And he
called unto him 2 centurions, saying, Make ready 200 soldiers to go to
Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the 3rd
hour of the night;
2. A Man of
Authority [Mt. 8:8-9]
The
centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come
under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I
am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go,
and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this,
and he doeth it.
3. A Man of
Action [Acts 22:25-26, 27:1, 6, 11, 31, 43]
- And as
they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it
lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? When the
centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed
what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
II. WHAT
DID THE CENTURION SEE?
1. He Saw a
Criminal [Luke 23:32-33, 38]
2. He Saw a
Character [Luke 23:4, 14, 22, 34]
3. He Saw a
Conqueror [Luke 23:37-39, 46, Jn. 19:30] “It is finished!”
III. WHAT
DID THE CENTURION REPORT?
1. He
Reported Jesus was a Righteous Man [Luke 23:47, John 17:25 “O righteous
Father”]
2. He
Reported Jesus was the Son of God [Mt. 27:54]
- Now when
the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake,
and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was
the Son of God.
3. He
Glorified God with What his Report [Lk. 23:46-47, Rm. 15:9]
And that the
Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I
will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
