DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM
HEB. 11:6
Rick Jackson
What does
that little phrase “diligently seek him” mean? In context the verse is talking
about God. About pleasing God. How do you seek God? Rm. 3:11 There is none that
understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Unless God calls, no man
seeks. Jesus said, [John 12:32] And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men unto me.
I. HOW DO
YOU SEEK THE ONE TRUE GOD?
1. NOT by Human
Reasoning [Is. 55:6-11]
Seek ye the
LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked
forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto
the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will
abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways
my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are
my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the
rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but
watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to
the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of
my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which
I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
2. NOT by Human
Senses [1 Cor. 2:9-14]
But as it is
written , Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart
of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath
revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea,
the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the
spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but
the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the
spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to
us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom
teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth ; comparing spiritual things with
spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God:
for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned.
3. BY the Word
of God as led by the Spirit of God [John 5:37-39, 16:7-11]
-And the
Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither
heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word
abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the
scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which
testify of me.
-Nevertheless
I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not
away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him
unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin , because they believe not on me; Of
righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment,
because the prince of this world is judged.
II. THE
EXAMPLE OF CAIN with ABEL [Heb. 11:4, Gen. 4:2-7]
1. Not by
Faith [Romans 10:17]
So then
faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
2. Not by
Grace [Eph. 2:8-9]
For by grace
are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
3. Not by
Christ [Jude 4, 10-11, John 14:6]
-For there
are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this
condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness,
and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
- But these
speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally,
as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! for
they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam
for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
III.
SCRIPTURAL SERVICE SABOTAGED [2 Chr. 26:14-21]
And Uzziah
prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and
habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones. And he made in Jerusalem
engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to
shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he
was marvellously helped, till he was strong. But when he was strong, his heart
was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God,
and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him fourscore priests of the
LORD, that were valiant men: And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto
him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but
to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out
of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine
honour from the LORD God. Then Uzziah was wroth, and had a censer in his hand
to burn incense: and while he was wroth with the priests, the leprosy even rose
up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the
incense altar. And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon
him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from
thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him.
And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a
several house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD:
and Jotham his son was over the king's house, judging the people of the land.
