HEBREWS 12:1-5

I. THE POSITIVITY OF CHASTENING

 

1. The Basis of Chastening is God’s Love [v. 6] not His anger, not cruelty, not hate

 

2. The Profit of Chastening is Ours [v. 10]

 

3. The Product of Chastening is Righteousness [v. 11] equity (of character or act); --righteousness.

 

II. WRONG RESPONSES TO CHASTENING

 

1. Despising It [v. 5, Pr. 12:1] to have little regard for, i.e. to disesteem:--despise.

 

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

 

2. Faint because of It [v. 5, 3, Galatians 6:9] give up, quit, bail out

 

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

 

3. Rebel at It [v. 15, 1 Sam. 15:23] “the root of bitterness” is an anti-God attitude, a rebellious attitude

 

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

 

III. THE RIGHT RESPONSE TO CHASTENING – REMEMBER

 

1. Remember the Word of God [v. 5, 13:22]

2. Remember Your Relationship [12:6-8]

 

3. Remember the Lord is in Control [12:9-14]
