If You Miss Jesus, You Miss the Point

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals

Luke 9:35, 36 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone.

God is very much in earnest about highlighting the singular nature of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is unique. He alone occupies His position. He is singular. There is none like Him. You find that repeatedly emphasized in the stories of Luke 9. For example, in Luke 9:7 Herod was perplexed about Jesus. Some people said He was John the Baptist who had been raised from the dead. Others said He was Elijah or one of the old prophets. No, it was not one of these men. It was Jesus. God is emphasizing the singular nature of the Lord Jesus.

Again, Jesus Himself asked His disciple about who people thought that He was. They said that some people said He was John the Baptist, and some said Elijah or one of the old prophets. It was easier for people to believe that an old prophet had come back from the dead than to acknowledge that Jesus was God in flesh, the Messiah, and God's Son.

Beginning in Luke 9:28, the Bible tells us the story of Jesus taking Peter, James, and John to the Mount of Transfiguration. In that instance two prophets, Moses and Elijah, did come back from the dead. Peter saw this and thought, "Whoa, this is amazing. Here's Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, and these are all great men." It seems that Peter saw Jesus on the same plane as just another great prophet. But God answers dogmatically, "This is my beloved Son: hear him. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone." They saw Jesus only.

If you miss Jesus in the events of this day, you've missed the point. It is so easy for us to be in awe of other people or in awe of what God has done but to miss Jesus Himself in the works that He has done. Sometimes people are the means of God's working, but never forget the Source of the wonderful works of God is God Himself. The Lord Jesus is singular. He will not share a place with anyone else in your life, and He deserves our highest praise and recognition in the events of this day.
