Love in Action
"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up." (1 Corinthians 13:4)

It is well known that "charity" in this famous "love chapter" is the Greek agape, which is translated "love" three times as often as it is translated "charity" even in the King James Version. Why then did the scholarly translators prefer to use "charity" in this chapter, of all places?

Possibly it is because 1 Corinthians 13 emphasizes what love does rather than what love is. Love is described in this chapter, not with adjectives or adverbs, but with verbs! "Charity," in the Old English sense, was not merely giving to feed the poor (note v. 3) but meant agape love—an unselfish, enduring, and active concern on behalf of others.

In this passage (vv. 4-8, 13) are listed 17 actions which love, or charity, does or does not engage in. Love acts with patience and kindness; it does not envy others or seek to impress others, neither does it exhibit arrogance or conceit. Love is never rude, does not seek its own way, is slow to take offense, and bears no malice or resentment. Love does not gloat over the sins of others and is delighted when truth prevails. Love will bear up under any trial and will never lose faith; it is always hopeful and unlimited in its endurance.

Finally, genuine love will be eternal. Even faith will cease when it is replaced by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and hope will finally be fulfilled (Romans 8:24), but love will abide forever. Love, of course, is eternal because Christ is eternal, and Christ is God, and God is love.

This classic passage, describing genuine Christian love, could in fact be read as a beautiful description of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. That is, "Christ suffereth long, and is kind," and so on, finally climaxing in the great truth, "Christ never faileth." Jesus Christ is, indeed, love in action! HMM

THE GARDEN OF EDEN

Prophecy Today Devotions
May 2014
Jimmy DeYoung
Thank you for reading my Prophetic Daily Devotionals!

And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

For further study - Genesis 2:1-17

As we continue our study of the book of Genesis, in this devotional, and in particular the first twelve chapters of the book, we are made aware that all the truth found in all sixty-six books of the Bible have their "beginning", their foundation, in the book of Genesis.

The first chapter is the record of "Creation" when Jesus in six, twenty-four hour days, created the heavens, the earth and all that is in them. Genesis 2 is a further explanation of some of the events and special effects of Creation.

Verses 1-3 reveal to us that after Jesus Christ, the member of the "Godhead" who created all things, Colossians 1:16, after the six days of Creation He rested on the seventh day. By the way, it was a twenty-four hour day that He rested, the same as the "day" He told the Jews to spend in rest, Exodus 20:11.

The atmosphere at Creation was like the tropics where there was a "mist", verse 6, that watered the earth since it had never rained, verse 5, and it would not rain until the time of the flood.

There is a great depth of knowledge in Genesis 2, but I guess my favorite is the record of Jesus creating the Garden of Eden, verses 8-17. Actually the "Garden" was created on the third day of Creation when the Lord brought forth the grass, the herb yielding seed and trees, Genesis 1:9-13.

It was in the "Garden of Eden" that the Lord created man and woman. The Lord placed man in the "Garden" to dress it and to keep it, verse 15.

In this chapter you will find several points of interest in relation to the "Garden". There were all types of trees in the "Garden", the "Tree of Life" and the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" were only two of the trees. The trees put forth fruit for Adam and Eve to eat, with the exception of the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil."

Notice also there is one "river", not four rivers, coming out of the "Garden of Eden", verse 10. One river flowed out of the "Garden" and became four rivers somewhere outside of the "Garden of Eden".

The river flowing out of the "Garden of Eden" was the Gihon, which gave the water for King David to anoint his son Solomon to be king, I Kings 1:33, 38 and 45. By the way, the Gihon's head waters are located underneath the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The original sight of the "Garden of Eden" is the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The "foundation stone" underneath the Dome of the Rock is, according to Jewish tradition, the place the Lord created man. It was also the site of the Holy of Holies in the Temple.

This has been the belief of the Jewish people for the location of the original sight of the "Garden of Eden", and has been known by the Jews for 5,774 years. In Jewish years, on their calendar, it's 5774. Where Jesus started, as the Creator, He will rule and reign from forever, the "Garden of Eden".

Now maybe you can see why the Moslems want the Temple Mount as their land. However, Bible prophecy says that the Garden of Eden belongs to the Jews, which will be the case in the last days, Isaiah 51:3Ezekiel 36:35 and Joel 2:3. (See my audio CD series on "Return to Eden".)

All Bible prophecy will be fulfilled, and possibly very soon. The truth be known, the next event in Bible prophecy, the Rapture, could happen at any minute, maybe even today.

PRAYER THOT: Thank you Lord for all truth found in Your Word.

Those Who Give Mercy Get Mercy

Bill Rice Ranch - First Light Devotionals

Nahum 3:7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

Those Who Give Mercy Get Mercy

What kind of help could you expect tomorrow if you lost all your leverage today?  If you had no money and no authority, what kind of help could you expect to receive because people wanted to give it? You might think on that for just a moment, because some of the most powerful people and nations in this world have built themselves at the expense of others. History is full of the rise and fall of empires, almost all of whom came to their zenith by raw power and the leveraging of that power against others.

Assyria, represented by the great city Nineveh, was no exception. She came onto the world stage by sheer force of cruelty, exertion of power, and ambition. Nahum pronounced woe on this city built on the misery and at the expense of others. Thus, when the time came that they were weak and no longer had the leverage to force people to aid them, there was no help. The reason should be self-evident. Those who withhold or lightly esteem mercy can expect none.

Here was mighty Nineveh who lightly esteemed mercy on both sides. On one side, God had extended mercy to them 100 years before when Jonah had brought a message of judgment. Nineveh had turned to God, but they had forgotten God and very quickly regressed back to their old ways of cruelty and oppression. They lightly esteemed God's mercy and thus they lightly esteemed the mercy they could have shown to others who were not as powerful as they were.

What do you suppose the reaction of the world was when Assyria was at the mercy of someone else? Nahum 3:7 says, "And it shall come to pass that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?" There were no comforters for Nineveh, only those who rejoiced.  The last verse of this book says, "All that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee:  for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?" They were reaping what they had sown.

Now you're an individual, not a nation, but you and I should both remember that the attributes that characterize our rise to power may also accompany our fall from power. Those who are merciful receive mercy. Those who are humble give it, and those who are wise do not take mercy for granted. They thank God for it and then pass it along.

Q: Can genetic engineers reenact ancient evolution in the laboratory?

A: Recent reports indicate that a research team has coaxed a bacterium to incorporate a bit of foreign language into its DNA. Though this foreign word means nothing to the bacterium as yet, writing a meaningful instruction using the two new letters is the next step. Once that hurdle is overcome, genetic engineers may rewire microbes to build biological products like pharmaceuticals and biofuels. In so doing they are capitalizing on God's great biological design seen in all life on earth.
But does this engineering demonstrate life from non-life? No, this research illustrates quite the contrary. Even if scientists were to invent a new genetic code and then manage to create synthetic analogues for all of life's processes, would that demonstrate abiogenesis? No it would not, because information would still be supplied, not randomly have come into existence on its own as molecules-to-man evolution would demand.
