A: In April 1977, the Japanese fishing trawler Zuiyo-maru operating off the coast of New Zealand snagged a large carcass at a depth of about 1,000 feet. The carcass was brought to the surface and onto the ship. The dead creature was about 33 feet long and weighed about 4,000 pounds. The ship's company was unsure about the identity of the carcass, and ultimately, no one could identify it for certain. The captain did not want this rotting creature on the ship for fear of spoiling the fish catch, so he decided to release it back into the sea. One of the crew had a few minutes to examine the creature. He took a few photographs and even managed to obtain pieces of horny fiber from an anterior fin. Then the carcass was returned to the sea. Upon returning to Japan, the tale was related to company officials, and the photographs were examined. A press conference was held to announce the finding, leading to widespread coverage of the discovery of this "sea monster." Several scientists in Japan strongly suggested that the creature was, in fact, a plesiosaur. Other scientists were less enthusiastic about this identification, and stated so publicly. In creationist circles, this news was greeted with great enthusiasm. What could be more exciting than finding evidence of an allegedly extinct species still alive today! Daily Devotional for September 10, 2010

 

Amos 5:18-19  "Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.  As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him?"                                                                                                                                                 From Bad to Worse   Do you know the meaning of the phrase "from bad to worse"?  Do some examples come to mind?  Bad is walking on thin ice; worse is falling in!  The Bible gives us another example of bad to worse in Amos 5: while running for his life from a lion, a man runs into a bear!  And when he finally gets to the safety of his house, there is a rattlesnake ready to strike him!  I don't know what you think of when you hear "from bad to worse," but that scenario is pretty rough!   What is even worse than the story above-and what the passage this morning is getting at-is thinking, "I can't wait until the Lord judges this wicked world," when a little bit of the wicked world is in your heart.  God says, "Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light."  Bad to worse is thinking that you want God's judgment on this world if you are not right with Him yourself!   The people in Amos were more concerned with going to a place to worship the Lord, while He was (and is) concerned about the heart.  These folks thought that they could pacify God with the religious things they were doing, yet their heart was not right with Him.  God says of their religious deeds, "I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell. . . . I will not accept them. . . . Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear. . . ." (verses 21-23)   They thought that worship was something you have in your hand or a place to which your feet go, but worship is in the heart.  They were sacrificing, going to Bethel, and even making beautiful music, but they were also taking bribes and oppressing the poor (verse 12).  They were not right with God because their heart was not right. All the good deeds they did and the sacrifices they made could never justify their wicked hearts.   God is not impressed by what you do, if your heart is not right.  A right heart begins with how you treat others.  You are not right with God if you are not right with other people.  No amount of good deeds can make up for a wicked heart toward others.  Wishing for God's judgment on the wicked when your heart is not right is going from bad to worse!   We should live a life that does not need to fear the coming judgment of the "day of the Lord."  The way to live that kind of life is to have a heart that is right with God and right with others.  That is the kind of heart that God will respond to and provide everything that is needed.   Browse our fall events schedule on our website: billriceranch.org

Cleansed by the Word

Cleansed by the Word September 10, 2010 "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word." (Psalm 119:9) Psalm 119:9-16 provides key instructions for those who would seek to please their Creator with a godly life. "Taking heed" (Hebrew shamar--guarding) God's Word is the foundation upon which a godly life is built (vv. 10-11). The psalmist sought God with his whole heart and pleaded with God to prevent him from wandering (Hebrew shagah--to stray through ignorance). That plea was then turned into a confirmation and an understanding: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (v. 11). With the assurance of these foundational elements, the psalmist promised the Lord that he will organize his life so that he "will not forget thy word" (v. 16). Similar to the apostle John's assurance in his first epistle, the psalmist recognized behaviors that he was already exhibiting. His "lips" have "declared" the judgments of God (v. 13). He knows that he has "rejoiced in the way" (v. 14) of God's revealed testimonies as much as the ungodly have boasted of gaining wealth. He is no stranger to godly living and loves the way of God, seeking to excel in holiness (1 John 5:3). The section closes with two "I will" promises, surely based upon his earlier commitment to cleanse his way. The psalmist promised to "meditate in [God's] precepts, and have respect unto ways" (v. 15). This assumes time, study, and careful thought about the purposes and intent of God's message. It is not a promise to sit comfortably and "clear one's mind" of cogent thinking, waiting on some voice to reveal truth. The psalmist can then "delight" in the statutes of the Word (Psalm 119:16; Romans 7:22). As we seek to know God's great Word, may His works refresh our hearts and delight our lives. I. THE WAY OF BALAAM [II Peter 2:15-16]

God's Persistence

 

Amos 4:8  "So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord."                                                                                                                                                 God's Persistence   One day when Weston was just a little guy, I reminded him to thank his mother for the lunch he had enjoyed, but he refused to do it.  Now, that is a silly thing to get in trouble for, and he sure did get in trouble for it!  The "thank you" was not the point; the refusing was.  It was a little uneasy for me as a parent, but there was a definite change after that.  Weston's will had to be broken.   Having your stubborn will broken is something that is necessary but not fun.  We learn in Amos that God matches our stubbornness with His persistence.  When we are stubborn in our will, He is persistent in His love to pursue us.  In Amos 4, God had allowed His people to go hungry and thirsty because He loved them, while they stubbornly refused to return to Him.  The problem was not the idolatry, the immorality, or the oppression; the problem was, they would not return to God.   God was persistent to pursue His people, and He will be persistent to pursue you today.  God is not about "beating you over the head"; He is about having you turn to Him!  Have you ever known someone that was running from the Lord?  All the "coincidences" they notice are really God's persistence!   Your will is the battlefield.  Your problem really is not gossip, thanklessness, or a bad attitude; your problem is your will.  And the solution to your problem is turning back to God!  If I, as a sinful father, would be persistent with Weston about being thankful, don't think that God will do less with His children.  Remember that God will match our stubbornness with His persistence.     Prayer Requests: 1. BRR Elementary Retreat this weekend (9.10-11) 2. Silencing Foolish Men

Silencing Foolish Men September 7, 2010   "For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men." (1 Peter 2:15)   The blasphemous diatribes of modern evolutionary humanists against the Word of God and the testimony of His people are really nothing but arrogant foolishness. "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:22) and "the LORD shall have them in derision" (Psalm 2:4). The biblical way to "silence the ignorance of foolish men" as our text says is simply by "well doing." This word (also translated "do well") is used almost exclusively by Peter, but he makes the point quite effectively.   Note the following, for example: "if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God" (1 Peter 2:20). "For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing" (1 Peter 3:17). "Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator" (1 Peter 4:19).   Our example in this, of course, is none other than Christ Himself, "who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously" (1 Peter 2:23). Unbelievers--if they want to badly enough--can reject every argument with some other objection or counter claim, but they have no way to gainsay a godly, law-abiding, righteous, loving life. The unbeliever may ridicule such a life for a time, but he must eventually come to see its sure foundation. "Whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation" (1 Peter 2:12). The main reason for "well doing," however, is simply that as our text says, "it is the will of God," and we can safely leave the response and the results to Him. God's Correction

 

Amos 3:2  "You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities."                                                                                                                                                 God's Correction   My wife and I were behind a very unhappy mother with two bad kids in Wal-Mart the other day.  The little girl was kicking and screaming while Mom tried to drag her along. (This very scene has probably been played out in Wal-Marts across America!)  The boy was in a cart in front of us, and when my wife made eye contact, he wrinkled his snotty little nose and stuck out his tongue!  Now, it is true that I was happy neither one of those kids were mine, but I didn't do anything about it.  He is not my son, and she is not my daughter!   On the other hand, upon being picked up from the airport, I noticed my kids were doing something that I did not want them to do.  Sena & I had been away and correcting my kids was not at the top of my list, but I had a responsibility to correct what was wrong because they are my kids!   When it comes to God our Father, He corrects us, not because He hates us but precisely because we belong to Him!  God reminded the children of Israel in Amos 3 that they belonged to Him, and that was the reason He was chastising them.  A brat in Wal-Mart who disrespects me can never compare to Wilson, Weston, or Lauren Rice!  Because I love my kids, I must correct and teach and train them.   It would be a mistake for one of my kids to think, "If anyone will give me a pass about doing wrong, my dad will."  Actually, if anyone will not give him a pass, his dad will not!  Likewise, God could not excuse Israel's sin, and He will not excuse our sin today.   The recognition that God chastens His own should protect you from a couple of misconceptions.  The first misconception is that since God will judge this world, He doesn't care what you do.  God does care precisely because you are His child!  Don't be deceived!   The second misconception is that since things are not going well, God must not love you.  Sometimes difficult times come precisely because you are doing what's right.  Don't be discouraged!   As our Heavenly Father, God provides protection, provision, direction...and correction. Our Reasonable God

Our Reasonable God September 6, 2010 "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18) Our God is a reasonable God, and our faith is a reasonable faith, based on sound evidence. It is not a credulous faith like that of the evolutionist who blindly believes either in the god of chance or in some sort of cosmic consciousness. Furthermore, He has told us to be reasonable in our witness to others. "Be ready always to give an answer [that is, an apologetic, a reasoned defense of our faith] to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:15). But how can it be reasonable that one whose deeds have been crimson with sin could ever be made "white as snow"? That would seem impossible! He or she would have to be "born again." This would require a mighty miracle--a reversal of time--and eradication of all the sins of the past. And that would indeed be unreasonable--even impossible, were it not for God. But "the things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Luke 18:27). What seems incredible to human wisdom is altogether reasonable to the God of creation. He has allowed man the freedom to sin (so that he could also be free to choose righteousness), but He can never fail in His creative purpose. "Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men" (1 Corinthians 1:25). This divine wisdom is centered in the sacrificial death and victorious resurrection of Christ, our Creator and Redeemer, who "loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood" (Revelation 1:5). As a result, now our "reasonable service" to Him is for each of us to offer ourselves to Him as "a living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1). I do not share his conclusion and would like to have an answer for him. —R.H., USA This is a common argument used against the traditional understanding of Genesis (i.e., God created everything in six normal-length days approximately 6,000 years ago). This argument attempts to show that inconsistencies exist between the first two chapters in the Bible. Critics and skeptics use it in their efforts to show the Bible cannot be trusted. Some Christians who believe in billions of years use it in trying to show that these chapters should not be understood in their plain sense. However, the argument is based on a misunderstanding of Genesis 2. Genesis 1:1–2:3 provides us with a chronological account of what God did on each of the days during the creation week. I Thessalonians 5:9  "For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,"                                                                                                                                                 The Day of the Lord   In I Thessalonians 5, "the day of the Lord" is mentioned as coming "as a thief in the night."  The awesome and terrible events of that day are given elsewhere in Scripture, but the encouragement for believers in found in verse 9: "For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."  It is wonderful to know that whenever these terrible events take place, God has not placed us into wrath because of Jesus Christ!   However, "the day of the Lord" is coming sometime in the future.  Once you are saved, you are placed (v. 9), preserved (v. 23), and called (v. 24) right now!  While we will not face the wrath of God, we ought to be burdened about the "day of the Lord" for those who are yet in danger.  God is the One who is taking care of preserving me "blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ," so I need not worry or fear the pending "day of the Lord."   In the end, the truth that "the day of the Lord" is coming should affect your life today if you are a Christian.  Are you motivated this morning to reach those who have not trusted Christ?  Let's be about the business of helping others see their need of Christ so that they can be ready for the "day of the Lord."   "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."     Prayer Requests: 1. Revival services tonight and this weekend in Kodiak, AK; LaSalle, IL; Heath, OH; and Ontario, Canada 2.
