A: One of the most persistent arguments used by many to "prove" the Bible is true is that women have more ribs than men. This "fact" is glibly repeated over coffee and donuts or innocently recited to children in Sunday School. After all, the Bible does say that woman was made from one of Adam's ribs. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. (Genesis 2:21-22) These verses tell us how God made the first woman. But would women from that point have more ribs than men? No. If someone accidentally cut off a finger or lost an arm or leg in an accident, would we expect children he had after the loss to be missing a finger, arm, or leg? If a man has an appendix or gall bladder removed, would his children be born without these organs? Of course, no one would even suggest such a thing. However, in the case of Adam and his rib, this unsupportable concept continues to be propagated. Why you should do what you know you ought to do

1. What is the most important thing to ever happen to you? Why, getting saved of course. What is the most important thing you can do for someone else? Why lead them to Christ and see them get saved. Put your priorities in place and share the gospel


2. What is the only thing that is going to truly change the world? Getting people saved of course. "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature". You and I are the only ones who can see people truly changed inside out. The gospel does it. Share it with everyone.


3. What is the first and last thing Jesus told us He would do and we should do? First "Make us fishers of men Matt 4:19" the last, "Preach the gospel to every person". Mk 15:16. Join the Peter club, "At thy word, I will" Lk 5:5. Why do you call me Lord and not do what I told you" Lk 6:46.


4. What brings more joy to you than any earthly thing? "And when he has found the lost sheep, he lays it on his shoulders REJOICING! Lk 15:5.


5. This is fantastic, you bring joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents" Lk 15:10.


5. How can you bring great joy to your friends and neighbors? "He calls together his friends and neighbors saying, rejoice with me for I have found my sheep which was lost" Lk 15:6

POEM OF THE WEEK - I MET THE MASTER

I had walked life's way with an easy tread;
Had followed where pleasure and comfort led.
Until one day in a quiet place,
I met the Master face-to-face.

With station and rank and wealth for my goal;
Much thought for my body and none for my soul.
I had entered to win in life's mad race,
When I met the Master face-to-face.

I met Him and knew Him and blushed to see,
That His eyes, full of sorrow, were fixed on me.
And I faltered and fell at His feet that day,
While my castles melted and vanished away.

Understanding Ownership

Understanding Ownership   August 11, 2010     "The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein." (Psalm 24:1)     The doctrine of creation is not merely a "scientific" debate. The opposite concepts of natural and evolutionary development versus the fiat creation of an omnipotent, omniscient, and transcendent Being impact every facet of our worldview. God owns the earth; He is its Creator (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 24:1-2; Revelation 4:11; and hundreds of other passages throughout the Bible).     Christians who revere the biblical revelation of God are not to be in conflict with this most basic of all doctrines. God owns the living creatures that inhabit the earth (Psalm 50:10). He owns the metals that establish monetary value in the earth (Haggai 2:8). He claims ownership over our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19). He even states ownership of our very souls (Ezekiel 18:4). Nothing is excluded from the sphere of His ownership and kingship (1 Chronicles 29:11-12; Isaiah 45:12; Colossians 1:16-17). And we are to manage God's resources as stewards of the Owner.     Lucifer's error was that he thought he could become like the Owner, usurping all the rights and privileges of the Creator (Isaiah 14:12-14). Israel's error was similar; they behaved as if their possessions were their own property (Malachi 3:8-10). The prodigal son claimed for himself the right of ownership and treated the money as if it were his own (Luke 15:12-14). The unfaithful steward made no effort to be productive (Matthew 25:24).     We have been delegated authority over the creation itself (Genesis 1:28), are required to be faithful with the "mysteries of God" (1 Corinthians 4:1-2), and are expected to administer "the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10). God Uses Tracts, Do You?

God Uses Tracts, Do You? is the title of a tract I wrote 50 years ago. It has been reproduced, copied, modified and published in 10 Christian publications. Here it is:

A sailor told how he was saved while reading a tract thrown to him from a passing car as he was hitch hiking. Alone in her room a girl who was a carhop received Christ after reading a tract left with a tip for her. A tract sent in the mail was used of God to lead a grandmother to the Savior. God uses tracts! Do you?

"Preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). Do you? You may not have enough time to witness personally to each person you meet, but you can witness through tracts. Here are some practical pointers on how to pass out tracts. Pass them out:

1. PRAYERFULLY. Of course everything should be done prayerfully. This is especially true when giving out tracts. Pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to hearts and to open the eyes of the recipient's understanding so that he may receive Christ.

2. POLITELY. Never be rude or crude. If our gospel is an offense, that is one matter. But if we are offensive, that is sin. Be very courteous.

3. PLEASANTLY. It costs so little to smile, but a smile goes so far. With love in your heart and a smile on your face, ask kindly, "May I give you something special to read?" If a person refuses or wants to argue, remain pleasant. Don't argue.

4. PLENTIFULLY. "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully" (2 Cor. 9:6). Tracts cost so little that you can afford to give them freely. Certainly some people will throw them away. Many turn off the radio, yet we still broadcast the gospel. Many see little fruit because they give out so little.

5. PERSISTENTLY. "Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary" (Gal. 6:9). Let's walk by faith and not by sight. Many have seen great results because they keep at it.


6. PRACTICALLY. Don't expect God to stop you suddenly on the street and say, "Here, give this man a tract" or "Wait, don't give him one." Would you even have a tract with you if He did? God expects us to be practical and buy up our opportunities. We don't wait for the Spirit to move us before we pray or read our Bible. Neither should we wait for a feeling to give out tracts.

Put tracts in letters, Christmas cards, and bills. Give them to clerks, waitresses, salesmen; and all who come to your door. Leave them in places where people will likely see them and pick them up. Go in teams for mass distribution to bus and train stations, airports, shopping centers, and sporting arenas. Send teams from the church, door to door, until you reach every home.

Doctors have put them in statements, businessmen in letters, and store owners in packages. Tract racks maybe profitably placed in stores, stations, hospitals, etc. Be sure the tracts are attractive and printed on good paper. Don't cheapen your witness. Watch and pray for some new way to distribute tracts.

7. PERSONALLY. One of the unique aspects of tracts is that anyone can use them, young or old, educated or uneducated, rich or poor. People who would not come to your church will read a tract in privacy. Be sure it contains the gospel -- the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for our sins!

8. PROSPECTIVELY. One of the greatest values of tract is their ease in opening the door to witness. Use them as a tool to witness but never as an excuse for not witnessing. After a person has read the tract try to engage him in conversation, and witness further to him.

9. PRESENTLY. Don't delay; start today. Remember you can never be led to give out a tract if you have none with you. Again, be like Peter, "I will do as you say" Lk 5:5. Try to get the gospel to EVERY person without being pushy or offensive.

10. PURPOSEFULLY. Stamp your address on the back of the tract for a follow-up.

Let's preach the gospel to every creature we meet through the use of tracts.

Haven't they found evidence of giants in Greece? These stories have made the rounds on the Internet in recent years, and frequently those curious (or excited) about these supposed fossil finds have contacted us about them. After all, the Bible does say that "There were giants in the earth in those days" (Genesis 6:4) and "there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants" (Numbers 13:33). Why should we not be excited about these discoveries that once again "prove the Bible is true"? Well, mainly because these reports are false. Basically, what is reported is that a gas company in Saudi Arabia or a group of archaeologists in Greece have uncovered the remains of giants. The reports are illustrated with photos of a dig site containing very large human skeletons. At first glance, these photographs look convincing. Then, without looking further into the matter, well-meaning people begin to use this as "proof" that the biblical text in Genesis and/or Numbers is true. However, the photographs in question are faked. They are the product of a competition for digital photographers who were trying to create an archaeological hoax. This innocent competition's photos were then used as the basis for a very widespread Internet hoax. Faith and Works

 

Mark 2:5,8 "When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. . . . And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?"   This is a great story! A man "sick of the palsy" had a need, and his four friends brought him to Jesus. The difficulty came when the crowd was too large to carry this sick man to the Lord, but these four friends weren't discouraged-they went to work on the roof and lowered their friend through the hole they had made!   Verse 6 tells us that some of the scribes reasoned in their hearts-they did not speak out loud. They were critical of the Lord Jesus and thought to themselves, "Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?" It is true that only God can forgive sins-no pastor, priest, or person can do that-but they obviously did not believe that Jesus Christ was "God only." However, the Lord Jesus "perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves. . . ." How did Jesus know what they were thinking? Because He is God!   With that in mind, what caught my attention is found in verse 5: "When Jesus saw their [the four friends'] faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy. . . ." How did Jesus see their faith? It was not because Jesus is God, although He is; He saw their faith because of their works in verses 1-4! They were not discouraged, they tore the roof off, and they lowered their friend down-that is how Jesus saw their faith.   Faith and works are not the same thing, although they are related. If these friends had depended on tearing off a roof for the man to be healed, that is works. But if tearing off the roof and lowering their friend down are because of their faith, that is something altogether different! Jesus perceived the scribes' hearts because He is God; He saw the friends' faith because of their works. Fire in the Bones

Fire in the Bones August 5, 2010 "Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay." (Jeremiah 20:9) When God's Word really becomes a part of one's soul, that one can never be the same again. As dejected Jeremiah said in his imprisonment: "The word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily" (Jeremiah 20:8), he testified; so he said: "I will not . . . speak any more in his name." But he could not quit! God's Word was burning in his bones, and he must let it out. "Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?" (Jeremiah 23:29). The psalmist David had a similar testimony. "I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue" (Psalm 39:2-3). When the resurrected Christ "expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself," the two disciples from Emmaus later testified: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" (Luke 24:27, 32). Of all the symbols applied in the Scriptures to God's Word, that of fire is the most awe-inspiring. Fire was not a discovery of some primitive man, as evolutionists imagine, but has always been an instrument of God's judgment, from the flaming sword in Eden (Genesis 3:24) to the lake of fire in hell (Revelation 21:8). In fact, God Himself is said to be "a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). The word of fire in the burning heart cannot be contained, but must be proclaimed at any cost. As Paul acknowledged: "Necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16). Obviously right and left are helpful directional instructions. The Source of What You Say

 

Matthew 16:17,23 "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. . . . But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men."   The Source of What You Say   We all know someone who "talks out of both sides of his mouth" or is "two-faced." What concerns me more is when two different things come out of my own mouth! Isn't it amazing how often we battle between what we should say and what we do say? Matthew 16 reminds us that there are two different sources for what we say. Jesus asked His disciples, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" Of course, there were a variety of answers. Then He asked, "But whom say ye that I am?" Peter actually answered correctly in verse 17! However, did the Lord praise Peter for being the smartest disciple or being brilliant? No! He said, "My Father which is in heaven [hath revealed it unto thee]." God gave Peter the answer. Peter finally got one right, yet he got none of the credit!   Only a few verses later, Peter rebutted the Lord's mission for coming to earth. Peter was encouraged when he answered the question of who Jesus was, but he was rebuked when he denied why Jesus came. Christ spoke to Peter directly in verse 23, but He rebuked the devil for Peter's words. In both cases, Peter did not get full credit because out of the same mouth came two completely different answers! Yes, Peter was still responsible for his words; but in one case God inspired his words, and in the other case Satan inspired his words.   What is coming out of your mouth? Is it sweet water or bitter water (James 3:11)? The devil will not inspire you to lay down your life, to pick up your cross, and to follow Christ. I am reminded (more times than I care to admit) that I say things that I don't want to say. Other times, when I say something good, I am tempted to think, "Boy, that was good!" The truth is, nothing worthwhile has come from my mouth that came naturally.   You are never just speaking for yourself. If you find yourself speaking for yourself, that means you are speaking for the enemy. He is the one who works through our sinful human nature. Every day you are speaking for somebody. Everything you say is coming from a source. In both cases in Matthew 16, Peter said what he said because he thought what he thought. On one occasion, the Lord was influencing his thinking. On the other occasion, the devil was using Peter's own selfish nature-the same nature that would later swear, deny Christ, and follow afar off.   When you speak this morning, you will speak from a source and for somebody. Who is influencing your thinking? THE MASTER AND THE MOTHER

Mark 7:24-30

The account of this mother and the lord Jesus is told in 2 Gospels. Mark, who presents the Saviour as the Perfect man, the man Adam should have been, the man we should strive to be, gives a shorter account. In Matthew 15:21-28 there is a more detailed account- mainly because Matthew presents Christ as the King of the Jews and the Holy Spirit had him highlight Jesus treatment of this Gentile woman. We can learn many lessons from the Master Teacher if we but open our ears, our eyes, and our hearts.


I. WRONG IS NEVER RIGHT [Mt. 15:21-22]

1. She had Heard [Mk. 7:24-25, Rm. 10:17]

2. She had Hope [Mt. 15:22]

3. She may have tried a Hoax [Mt. 5:22b]

How have others approached the Lord- Pharisee, Cain, etc

II. WAITING IS NOT REJECTION [Mt. 15:23-24]

1. Jesus did not Respond to her prayer [v. 23a]

2. Jesus did not Respond to the disciples’ prayer [v. 23b]

3. Jesus did Respond with Instruction [v. 24]

David learned this with the ark, Paul with the thorn in the flesh, thief on the cross

III. THE WAY IS NOT RACIST [Mt. 15:25-28]

1. She Changed her Approach [v. 25]

2. Jesus Challenged Their Thinking [v. 26]

3. Jesus Cares for People [v. 27-28, 2 Timothy 2:13]

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
