CANCEL CULTURE

Isaiah 5:20-21

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE PROBLEM WITH MOST CANCEL CULTURE

1. Warped Morals [Isaiah 5:20-21]

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

2. Warped Minds [Rom. 1:21-22, 28]

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

3. Warped Men [Rm. 1:29-32]

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

II. THE BLESSING OF A PARTICULAR CANCEL CULTURE

1. God has Canceled my Sin Record [Col. 2:14]

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

2. God has Canceled my Sins [Is. 43:25, Micah 7:18-19]

I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.

Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

3. God Will Cancel My Sin Nature [Rm. 7:23-25, 1 John 3:2]

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

III. THE PARTICULARS OF A FUTURE CANCEL CULTURE

1. Jesus Will Cancel Their Ungodly Culture [Ps. 2]

2. Jesus Will Control The World’s Culture [Revelation 2:27]

And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

3. Jesus Will Establish a Culture that Will Never Be Canceled [2 Pt. 3:12-13]

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

THY KING COMETH

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE PROPHECY OF ZECHARIAH 9

1. The King will be Just

Matthew 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

Matthew 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Acts 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;

Acts 7:52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

2. The King will be Saviour

-so says Gabriel - Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

-so says the Samaritans - John 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

-so says the apostles - Acts 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

-so says Paul - Acts 13:23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:, Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:, 2 Timothy 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

-so says Peter - 2 Peter 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

-so says John - 1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

3. The King will be Lowly [Philippians 2:5-11]

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

II. THE FULFILLMENT OF MATTHEW 21

1. It was Directed [v. 1-3]

2. It was Deliberate [v. 4-5]

3. It was Demonstrative [v. 6-11]

III. THE PROPER RESPONSE

1. Receive the King [1 Timothy 1:15-17, John 1:12]

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

2. Worship the King [Matthew 2:2]

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3. Serve the King [John 12:26]

If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be : if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

Certainly every Christian ought to agree that it is more important to get a man to repent of his sins and turn to Christ for salvation than it is to get him baptized. Let us all believe in baptism and teach it as we understand the Bible. But let us never put the water before the blood. I would be glad if all born-again Christians should be immersed, but I would much rather have a man sprinkled and get him to Heaven because he trusted Christ for salvation, than let him go to Hell while I was arguing about immersion. The salvation of souls ought to be first with Christians and an evangelist who centers on the revival of saints and the winning of souls ought to get the cooperation of Bible-believing and devoted Christians. - John R. Rice [How to Have A Revival, pg. 336-337]

Soul winning is the main business of a Christian. The saving of sinners is the thing nearest to the heart of God. For that purpose Christ came to earth, and lived and died and rose again. Even now the angels in Heaven rejoice more over one sinner that repents than over ninety-nine just persons that need no repentance. Soul winning is the eternal business. One sows now, and then reaps throughout the endless ages of glory, when he gives the gospel to sinners. - John R. Rice [The Soul-Winner's Fire, pg. 21]

The greatest event that can ever happen on this earth, aside from the return of Christ Himself, is an old-fashioned, Heaven-sent, Holy Spirit revival when God comes near to the hearts of many men, saving sinners and renewing and rejoicing the hearts of His own people. Revivals are necessary. They are right. They are part of God's plan when dealing with His people and with all mankind. Revivals ought to be the chief concern of pastor and people in every church. - John R. Rice [The Soul-Winner's Fire, pg. 51]

God calls and prepares evangelists, revivalists. Ephesians 4:11, 12 says: "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."
God gives evangelists for the work of edifying the saints, as well as for winning sinners. That proves God is in favor of revivals. - John R. Rice [The Soul Winners Fire, pg. 59]

Those who despise revivals ignore the way in which God has dealt with His people, as recorded in the Bible. Again and again throughout the Bible we find accounts of how God sent mighty revivals upon His people. Elijah at Mount Carmel, Daniel in Babylon, Nehemiah in Jerusalem after the captivity, kings Hezekiah and Josiah in Judea before the captivity; John the Baptist by the River Jordan, Peter and others at Pentecost, Philip in Samaria---all these experienced mighty revivals. Bless God for the revivals recorded in the Bible! - John R. Rice [The Soul-Winner's Fire, pg. 60-61]

The history of God's dealings with the race shows that when God sent His prophets to warn the people, the inevitable result was either revival or judgment. Today, surely, the only thing that can prevent the terrible wrath of God upon America is a Heaven-sent revival of His blessing and power, a mighty turning to God. - John R. Rice [The Soul-Winner's Fire, pg. 61]

I believe that a nation is in great danger after it has passed the first stages, when the government is settled, when its frontiers are developed, when prosperity and independence are safely assured, when danger seems a thing of the past. Then comes the slow decay of manhood, corruption in politics, worldliness in the church, atheism in the school and license in the home. When America was young, we believed in God. Our greatest danger has come "in the midst of the years." Oh, the need for revival in the midst of the years! - John R. Rice [The Soul-Winner's Fire, pg. 68, published in 1941]

POEM OF THE WEEK

 In a Small Place

Fret not because thy place is small,
Thy service need not be,
For thou canst make it all there is
Of joy and ministry.

The dewdrop, as the boundless sea,
In God's great place has part;
And this is all He asks of thee;
Be faithful where thou art.

In thee His mighty hand can show
The wonders of His grace,
And He can make the humblest room
A high and holy place.

Thy life can know the blessedness
Of resting in His will;
His fullness flows unceasingly
Thy cup of need to fill.

His strength upon they weakness waits,
His power for thy task.
What more, O child of all His care,
Could any great one ask?

DON’T WALK/WALK

EPHESIANS 4:17-32

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. DON’T WALK THE WALK OF THE LOST [v. 17-19]

1. It is a Depraved Walk [v. 17, 2 Peter 2:18]

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

2. It is a Blind Walk [v. 18, Mark 3:5]

And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

3. It is a Filthy Walk [v. 19, 2 Peter 2:7, 18]

And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

II. WALK THE WALK OF LEARNING [v. 20-25]

1. Learn to Put Off [v. 20-22, Romans 13:12]

The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Ephesians 4:22, 25 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

2. Learn to Put On [v. 23-24, 6:11, 14]

3. Learn to Put Away [v. 25, Hebrews 12:1, James 1:21, 1 Peter 2:1]

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings

III. WALK THE WALK OF LIFE [v. 26-32]

1. A Life of Grace [v. 26-29]

2. A Life of the Spirit [v. 30, Gal. 5:16-25]

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

3. A Life of Christ [v. 31-32, Philippians 1:29]

For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

STOP BEING IGNORANT! (IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS)

Pastor Rick Jackson

Acts 17:23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Romans 1:13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren

Romans 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant

1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Corinthians 1:8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren

God does not put a premium on ignorance and nor should we. The lost are ignorant, young Christians are ignorant, and alas, older Christians are ignorant.

I. IGNORANCE OF UNBELIEVERS IS EXPECTED

1. Their Ignorance of Christ’s Person can be Forgiven [Acts 3:12-19]

And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

2. Their Sins Can Be forgiven [1 Tm. 1:13-14]

Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

3. Their Ignorance should Change when they Do [Eph. 4:17-20]

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ;

II. IGNORANCE OF BABES IN CHRIST IS UNDERSTANDABLE [1 Peter 1]

1. Growth in Grace is Characterized by Godliness [1 Peter 1:13-16]

2. Growth in Grace is Based on God’s Word [1 Peter 1:23-25, 2 Pet. 1:16-21]

3. Growth in Grace is Commanded for Christians [1 Peter 2:1-3]

III. IGNORANCE OF OLDER CHRISTIANS IS SHAMEFUL

1. Ignorance often leads to conceit [Romans 11:25]

For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

2. It is Carnal & Babyish [1 Cor. 3:1-4] And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

3. It is Spiritual Laziness [Heb. 5:11-6:3]

Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

Any ministry to be fruitful for God must be in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is impossible to preach aright and fruitfully without the Word; likewise, it is impossible to preach aright and fruitfully without the Holy Spirit. When the miraculous Word is carried and made to live and burn in the heart by the blessed Holy Spirit, then one may have, like Jeremiah, the Word of God burning as a fire shut up in his bones. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 286]

When we come to read the Bible, how needful it is that our hearts long for and beseech the Spirit of God to open the Word and teach us. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 287]

How much of the Scripture should one read every day? One noble man of God answers, "Read until the heart burns." Only as one waits upon God with the blessed Word until the Word burns, can the Scripture mean to us all it ought to mean. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 287]

In West Texas a farmer deacon said to me sadly, "Brother Rice, I am afraid many of the preachers around here are not called to preach. They never have any tears. They never win souls. The services are so dead." But I answered, "Most likely they really are called, but are not anointed to preach." Many a man is called to preach and yet his ministry is dead because he does not have the fire of God in his bones, because he does not have the anointing of God upon him. Or in the language of Jeremiah, the Word has not become a burning fire in his heart, so that he is compelled to speak. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 297]

Hudson Taylor had a motto, "Attempt great things for God, expect great things from God." In Psalm 81:10 the Lord says that in view of such a wonderful program as we have, we should open our moth wide and He will fill it. And surely He means that we should loosen cords and strengthen stakes, that we should attempt great things for God, and expect God to make possible that which otherwise would not be possible. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 256]

Revivals come from God. A real heart-refreshing, church-building, sin-convicting, home-righting, city-shaking, soul-saving, God-honoring revival is a miracle of God's grace and we cannot have it unless God gives it. But that is no reason why we should not do human preparation for revivals. I do not believe that God ever gives revivals except as men and women do their human part in getting ready for the blessing God is so anxious to give. We need never doubt that we can have revival when we meet God's requirements so we ought to prepare for and organize for a revival, it we want one. - John R. Rice [How to Have A Revival, pg. 315]

I never change my preaching to please the worldly or the unbelieving. On this matter we must not compromise. But, oh, for love like that of the Lord Jesus who preached to both publicans and sinners, Sadducees and Pharisees, all alike, every time He could get them into His audience! - John R. Rice [How to Have A Revival, pg. 322]

WHILE WE WAIT

2 THESSALONIANS 2

Pastor Rick Jackson

I have never been a big fan of waiting… fortunately I am a big fan of reading. But what about while we wait for the Lord?

I. THE WEAK WILL NEEDLESSLY WORRY [v. 1-5]

1. They Falter - needing assurance since they’re easily shaken [v. 1-2, Jn 14, Ephesians 4:14]

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive

2. They Fear - even though the one they fear can’t get to them [v. 3-4, Matthew 10:28]

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

3. They Forget - though the infallible Word is available [v. 5, 1 Th. 4:13-18]

II. THE WICKED WILL CONTINUOUSLY WORK [v. 6-12]

1. Present Activities [v. 6-7a]

2. Prophesied Antichrist [v. 7b-10]

3. Pathetic Apathy [v. 11-12]

III. THE WISE WILL SCRIPTURALLY WALK [v. 13-17]

1. Still in the World [v. 13-14]

2. Standing by the Word [v. 15-16]

3. Stablished in the Work [v. 17]

THE GIFT OF CHRIST & THE GIFTS OF CHRIST

EPHESIANS 4:7-16

Pastor Rick Jackson

I. THE GIVING OF THE GIFTS [v. 7-10]

1. The Timing [v. 7-8, John 16:7]

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

2. The Basis [v. 8-9, Rm. 8:31-37, 1 Corinthians 15:57] The Basis is the Victory of Christ

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

Historical/Biblical examples:       Judges 5:12 Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.

Isaiah 14:2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. [cp. Heb. 2:9-15]

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

3. The Person [v. 10, Acts 1:11]

Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

II. THE MINISTERS OF THE GIFTS [v. 11]

1. The Foundational Ministers [2:20]

Apostles and prophets were necessary before the Scripture was complete. Indeed, some of them are the ones God used to give us the New Testament.

2 Peter 3:1-2 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

Note the qualifications for Apostles given in Acts 1:15-26- no one living can claim to have seen Jesus in the flesh. Even Paul considered himself, as of one born out of due time. [1 Corinthians 15:8] 1 Corinthians 9:1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

THE BOOK!

THE BOOK!

Adapted from a Lee Roberson Message by Pastor Rick Jackson

HEB. 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

As he lay dying, the British poet, Sir Walter Scott, said, "Bring me the Book!" When asked what book he replied, "There is but one book."

I. THE BIBLE IS THE GREATEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN

1. IT HAS A DIVINE ORIGIN [2 Tm. 3:16, Peter 1:21] All scripture is given by inspiration of God,

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The Word of God is the Book that is Divine yet is very human. It is the Book that reveals the thoughts of God in the language of men. We do not say that the Bible contains the Word of God- the Bible IS the Word of God. There are 66 books in the Bible- 39 in the OT and 27 in the NT- but the Bible is one Book, and God is the Author.

2. IT HAS A DIVINE SUBJECT - THE LORD JESUS CHRIST [Col. 1:18] …that in all things he might have the preeminence.

The Bible contains the greatest fact and story of history. Here we read about Christ the Saviour- His birth, his life, His death, His resurrection, His ascension, His work at the Father’s right hand, and His coming again. It is His story!

This world of infidels tries to say Jesus was a failure. But was He? Born in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth He only lived 33 years. He had no pull or connection of any kind with the world. Yet Christ began a work which continues until this day, a work which is the greatest business on the face of the earth.

3. IT HAS DIVINE AUTHORITY [John 12:48]

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

Men don’t really judge it, the Bible judges them. You read the Bible and follow it or the Bible condemns you. God has spoken, and this Word stands. You cannot ridicule the Word of God and get rid of it. Men have tried this. Hell will doubtless be filled with those who thought they could make light of God’s Holy Word. The Word of God must be received and believed. This is God’s Holy, infallible, dynamic message to mankind.

II. THE BIBLE IS THE WARMEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN                      The Bible has a message for every person. First…

1. IT HAS A MESSAGE OF COMFORT [Romans 15:4 …comfort of the scriptures…]

We live in a world of tears. The Bible speaks and gives comfort to every heart. In the hour when your heart is broken, you are not concerned about the philosophies of sinful men. You want the Word of God and to know that He is by your side. Ps. 23, John 14, 1 Cor. 15, 1 Th. 4, Rev. 21 & 22 give comfort as do countless other Scriptures. Second…

2. IT HAS A MESSAGE FOR THE DEFEATED & THE DOUBTING HEART [Mark 11:22]

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Thomas, one of the 12, who was called Didymus went through a period of doubt. Jesus appeared and said, “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” It was then that Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God” [Jn. 20]

How wonderful that the Lord Jesus Christ has a word for this doubting one! Jesus said, “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

Abraham, Moses, Joshua and David knew defeat even as we all know it. God spoke to them and God will speak to you and to me.

Jonah played the coward and tried to run from God. But in the providential work of God, Jonah was brought back and did the task that God had called him to do.

John Mark tried to escape his duty. God spoke to his heart and brought him back. Yes, here is the Word of encouragement for your defeated heart. If you feel you have gone just as far as you can go, then, my friend, it is time to come in touch with God’s message. Third…

3. IT HAS THE MESSAGE OF SALVATION [John 5:39]

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Within the covers of this Book, there is a message so clear, “the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein” [Is. 35:8]. Simply stated the message is this: He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. [Jn 3:36]

The Bible message must reach us and chance us. Here is the greatest message of all the earth. Here is the book that tells of Jesus Christ who alone has the power to save and transform. Here is the Book that gives us a message that will lead us along the way in the dark valleys, through trying circumstances; in the midst of opposition, we can have victory through our blessed Lord.

III. THE BIBLE IS THE TOUGHEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN

Why? This is a book of black and white. There are no gray spots in the Word of God. There are no shades of compromise. It is a Book setting forth that which is right and that which is wrong. It is a Book of salvation or damnation, Heaven or Hell, Christ or the Devil.

1. IT HAS THE SAME MESSAGE FOR EVERY CENTURY [Psalm 119:89] For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

The message of the Bible has not changed from the 1st century to now. Many have been the efforts of man to “update” the Bible. This is the day of multitudes of translations and new versions. Bibles are written omitting certain portions. What foolishness! You cannot change the word of God. This is God’s eternal Word, and it remains the same.

The Bible has very pointed things to say about those who try to change this Book. [Dt. 4:2, Rev. 22:18-19]

Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

2. THE BIBLE HAS THE SAME MESSAGE FOR EVERY NATION [Proverbs 14:34]

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

When nations set themselves against God they are destroyed [Ps. 2]. When nations ignore God they soon come to weakness. When we defy God and turn away from these plain teachings then we are courting disaster. This nation has been blessed of God for one reason- the Lord has been recognized; but when the nation turns away from God, our sins will not be overlooked. We have suffered and we will suffer.

3. THE BIBLE HAS THE SAME MESSAGE FOR EVERY PERSON [Acts 10:34]

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

The Bible is tough on sin. The Bible plays no favorites. The Bible pictures man exactly as he is. There are many people who hate the Bible because of this. But you see, the Bible is tough.

Jesus spoke to the Pharisees, scribes, and Sadducees and called them “blind guides”, “hypocrites,” and “serpents”. When you read through the Gospels you begin to see how tough the Bible is.

The Bible is also tender. The Bible is the voice of God calling men to repent and be saved. The Bible is calling Christians to a life of fulfillment and joy by following Christ. Simply come to Him in faith believing.

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

When Jesus died on the cross He shouted triumphantly, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). So Jesus was satisfied with the finished work. He went to Heaven and we are told that He sat down on the right hand of the Father. His sacrifice and atoning work was done! God the Father was satisfied, too. And every poor sinner who comes on the merit of the sacrifice already made is freely received. Now there is no more offering for sin. By one sacrifice the Lord Jesus has perfected forever all them that are sanctified or set apart for Him! - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 159]

Let every Christian, then, who can, get a good education. Let every one who has a good singing voice take training if he can. Let every man who preaches learn to outline his sermons and make them logical and pointed and compelling and powerful if he can. But always let us confess our weakness and give God the glory and depend on the power from Heaven! - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 174]

More than once I have said to a man, "Are you a Christian?" And he has answered me, "That is a personal matter between me and God. A man's religion is his own private matter." Well, as far as the law of the land is concerned a man has a right to his religion and a right to keep it a secret, but as far as God is concerned, he has no right to keep it secret. The Great Commission by the dear Lord Jesus makes it so that the Christian is required to tell it wherever he goes, that he is a child of God. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 191]

A study of the New Testament makes it clear that no one was ever baptized except those who claimed to be saved. In the New Testament no one was ever baptized in order to be saved. When the Pharisees and Sadducees came to John in the wilderness to be baptized of him, he rebuked them boldly and said, "Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance." He would not baptize people who did not give evidence of having repented. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 219]

Jesus said, "For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed. . . ." Christ and the Bible are identified in this matter. One cannot be true to Christ without being true to the Bible. One cannot deny Christ without denying the Bible. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 234]

There is no way to be true to Christ without being true to His Word. One cannot fully confess Christ before men without standing up for the Word of God. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 239]

When denominational leaders called on me and warned me in 1926 in Fort Worth that, should I continue my testimony about modernism and evolutionary teaching in Baylor University, they would see that doors were closed against me, see that I was publicly renounced, and could not get revival openings--I found, thank God, that God opened the doors for me all over America! Those who claim Christ need not fear. Those who stand up boldly for Christ at great cost may be assured that God is faithful. Every hair on your head is counted. You are worth more to God than many of the little sparrows He watches so carefully, worth more than all the millions of wild flowers which He clothes so beautifully! So fear not! Stand up for Jesus! Do not be ashamed. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 245]

BIG DAYS AHEAD

1 THESSALONIANS 1:5-10

Pastor Rick Jackson

It is interesting how we remember certain events and times in history. Amazing things often are remembered with the ordinary drudgery of our lives. . . . or vice-versa. I remember we bought new furniture in  the year 2005 probably because that same year Rachel & Ben got married and later that year my mother went to be with the Lord. I have mixed feelings about that year obviously. We often remember mundane things happening during anything but mundane events in the world: the JFK assassination, Tuesday- Sept. 9. 2001, Pearl Harbor Day, etc. But my friend, all these days pale in comparison with some big days ahead- days that will be marked by many events but all in relation to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ! Jesus is coming again!

Now, I want you to notice:

I. THE PROMINENCE OF THE SECOND COMING

1. In the Old Testament - In the Pentateuch, in the Historical Writings, in the Poetical books, in the Prophetic books. The Second Coming is mentioned twice as much as the 1st coming. [Ps. 22, 24, Is. 2, 9, 11, 53, Micah 5:2]

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting .

Peter says, “Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.” 1 Peter 1:11

2. In the Teachings of Christ [Matthew 24:44]

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

3. In the New Testament [The Gospels, the Epistles, the Book of Revelation – all the divisions speak of it]

The Prominence of the Second Coming. Then again, I want you to notice:

II. THE POWER OF THE SECOND COMING

1. The Second Coming of Christ Emphasizes Security [Jn. 14:1-6]

2. The Second Coming of Christ Encourages Separation [1 Jn. 3:2-3]

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

3. The Second Coming of Christ Energizes Soul-winning [1 Thess. 5:1-10]

III. THE PURPOSE OF THE SECOND COMING

1. The Purpose of the Second Coming is to Bring us into His Presence [1 Th. 4:16-18]

2. The Purpose of the Second Coming is to Conform us to His Person [Phil. 3:20-21, Psalm 17:15]

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

3. The Purpose of the Second Coming is to Fulfill the Promises of God [2 Pet. 3:1-9ff, 2 Corinthians 1:20]

This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

UNITY NOT UNION

EPHESIANS 4:1-6

Pastor Rick Jackson

Why unity and not union? If you take two strange cats and tie their tails together you will have union but not unity. If you take two animals that are the best of friends and put them in the same area you have both union and unity. God desires unity amongst Christians.

Though there are many Christians, each Christian must make up their mind that they will serve God regardless of the actions of others.

I. THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LORD’S WALK (you and Christ) [v. 1]

1. It is to be a Contented Walk “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord” [Philippians 4:11]

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

2. It is to be a Worthy Walk “beseech you that ye walk worthy” [Colossians 1:10]

That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

1 Thessalonians 2:12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

3. It is to be a Responsive Walk “walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called“ [Philippians 3:14]

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

II. THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LIFE’S WORK (you and others indwelt by the Holy Spirit) [v. 2-3]

1. Considering Ourselves “With all lowliness and meekness” [v. 2, Philippians 2:3]

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

2 Corinthians 10:1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ…

2. Considering Others “with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love” [v. 2, 2 Peter 3:15]

 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

3. Considering Our Indwelling Friend- the Holy Spirit [v. 3]

III. THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LORD’S WORD [v. 4-6]

There is a so-called Christian group that calls itself Unity and another which refers to themselves as Unitarians – the problem with both these groups is that they do not hold to the Bible as the inerrant, inspired, authoritative Word of the Living God. There can be no true unity amongst those who call themselves Christians if that union is not according to the Word of God.

John writes in 2 John, for example, Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

1. One Body- the Church [v. 4, 1:20-23]

2. One Spirit- the Holy Spirit [v. 4, 1:13-14]

3. One Hope- the Blessed Hope [v. 4, Galatians 5:5]

For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. are called in one hope of your calling;

Col. 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

Col. 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

1 Th. 2:19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

1 Th. 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

4. One Lord- Jesus Christ [v. 5, John 13:13]

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

5. One Faith- the Body of Truth [v. 5, 4:13, 1 Timothy 4:1]

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

6. One Baptism- the Work of the Holy Spirit [v. 5]

There are several kinds of baptism in the Scriptures. In fact, Luke records John the Baptist mentioning three in Luke 3:16, John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

So, what “One baptism” is in view here? There is a difference of opinion of good men on this matter. Some believe it refers to water baptism while others believe it refers to the work of the Holy Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

It is this baptism, not water baptism, that I believe is in view here for the simple reason of the context. It is all about things associated with our salvation and it would seem inconsistent or out of place to mention something that is after salvation and not part of it.

7. One God- the Father [v. 6, Romans 3:30]

Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

1 Cor. 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

1 Tm. 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LORD’S WALK (you and Christ)

THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LIFE’S WORK (you and others indwelt by the Holy Spirit)

THERE IS THE UNITY OF THE LORD’S WORD

WHAT WE REALLY NEED

2 Kings 7

Pastor Rick Jackson

The antagonist of our story is man who thinks very highly of his own opinion and very little of God’s man, God’s Word and God Himself. He learns too late the truths we will discuss this morning, if he had a chance to learn them at all before his unfortunate demise. He thought God could not meet their needs. He thought his needs were not what his needs actually were. He did not really need inexpensive food, he needed to listen to the words of the living God and heed them.

God is a God that knows our needs- often when we do not know them ourselves. God is a God that meets needs, especially when we cannot meet them ourselves. God is a God that anticipates needs. Especially when we cannot anticipate those needs because we do not know what the future holds… but those who are saved, know Who holds the future.

I. THE NEED OF SALVATION

I went to America to convert the Indians, but, oh, who shall convert me? Who, what, is he that will deliver me from this evil heart of unbelief? - John Wesley

1. A Lost Person Needs Forgiveness [Col. 1:12-14]

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

2. A Lost Person Needs Saving Grace [Eph. 2:8-9]

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

3. A Lost Person Needs The Saviour [1 John 4:14]

And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

These needs never change until they are fulfilled in Christ!!!!

II. THE NEED OF SANCTIFICATION

1. A Saved Person Needs Daily Forgiveness [1 Jn. 1:7-10]

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another , and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

2. A Saved Person Needs Living Grace [Hebrews 4:16]

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

3. A Saved Person Needs The Spirit of Christ [Gal. 5:16-18]

III. THE NEED OF THE FUTURE

1. A Saved Person Will Need to Be Living an Expectant Life [Matthew 24:44]

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

2. A Saved Person Will Possibly Need Dying Grace [1 Peter 5:10]

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while , make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

I find that many Christians are in trouble about the future; they think they will not have grace enough to die by. It is much more important that we should have grace enough to live by. It seems to me that death is of very little importance in the meantime. When the dying hour comes, there will be dying grace; but you do not require dying grace to live by. - Dwight L. Moody

3. A Saved Person Will Need to be Ready to Face the Saviour [1 Jn. 2:28-29, 3:2-3]

And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

He Being Dead Yet Speaketh

I came across this outline today. Brother Wayne has been with the Lord some years now. I miss my friend but look forward to seeing him again. The picture is from much earlier [1980s] when he visited our house and was on the front porch with me & my daughter Rachel in Chattanooga, TN. We worked together in 2 churches in TN. and 1 in FL.

Rev. Wayne Vinson

preached at Bradford Baptist Church Feb. 27, 2011

John 4:6-10, Romans 6:20-23, Eph. 2:8-10

I. THE GIFT

1. It is a Free Gift [Jn. 3:16]

2. It is Undeserved

3. It is THE Gift [Jn. 14:6, Mt. 1:21]

II. GOD'S GIFT

1. It's A Perfect Gift [James 1:17]

Nothing wrong with it, can't honestly find complain or find fault.

2. It's a Needed gift [Rm. 5:12]

III. SALVATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST- THE GIFT OF GOD

1. Do You Know the Gift? [Jn. 4:6-10]

2. Having the Gift Involves Faith [Eph. 2:8-9, I Jn. 5:12]

3. The Gift is Forever [Rm. 6:23, Eph. 4:30, Heb. 6:17-19]

John R. Rice Quotes of the Week

A beautiful example of Bible preaching is found in the eighth chapter of Nehemiah. There all the people were gathered together in the street that was before the water gate and Ezra the scribe brought the law of Moses. There Ezra stood upon a pulpit of wood and opened the Book in the sight of all the people. Then a number of godly preachers helped to explain the Scriptures. "So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading" (Neh. 8:8). That was Bible preaching. They read the Word of God and explained the sense and caused the people to understand the meaning. And it was not dry-as-dust preaching either. For the people were so moved upon that they mourned and wept and repented of their sins. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 132-133]

So, preacher, start with the Scripture. Find the theme, the real subject itself, in the Scripture. Find the outline in the Scripture, or if the outline itself is just logically deduced, then find Scriptures to back up every statement and quote them. Use many Scriptures to make clear the point and use Bible illustrations whenever possible. There is living power in the Word of God. The Scripture itself brings conviction to people who are not convicted, brings light to people in darkness, brings salvation to those who are lost. We need Bible preaching. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 133-134]

It is no honest preaching of the Bible that does not preach Hell. Man is a sinner. If he does not repent he will die unconverted forever away from God. Men ought to be warned of the horrible fate of dying without Christ. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 138]

God's wonderful plan of salvation would never have been planned by men. All the false religions of the world put the emphasis on man's goodness or man's works or human ceremonies, or human institutions or merits, instead of on the unmerited grace of God for Hell-deserving sinners. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 155]

There is something shocking to human wisdom and human sense of propriety in God's drastic statement in Romans 4:4,5, "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." Read those verses and see how they go against all human wisdom. Who is it here that gets saved? "Him that worketh not." Who is it here that gets saved? It is the ungodly! God saves people who do not deserve it, ungodly, wicked people who do not do anything to deserve salvation! So the Scripture says. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 155-156]

How are people saved? "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." People are not saved by works. People are not partly saved by works. People are not kept saved by works. Every person who ever got saved, got saved without deserving it. I did not deserve salvation when I got it. I have not deserved it since. - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 157]

Somebody else will stand to testify and say, "I am determined to go through. I am resolved to make Heaven my home." Poor, deluded soul, it takes a lot more than determination to get to Heaven. It takes the blood of Jesus Christ and the mercy of God who saves unworthy sinners not fit to be saved! - John R. Rice [Great Truths for Soul Winners, pg. 158]

Some have made little room for Christ, some give Him more, and in some He has the whole house. Or, viewed from another standpoint, in some Christ is just present, in others He is prominent, and in others again, He is pre-eminent. - Graham Scroggie

3. Spiritual Saturation [v. 18-19] God goes beyond the three dimensions of height, width and length
