JOHN R. RICE QUOTES OF THE WEEK

Young men have told me of harrowing temptation and shameful defeat in sex temptation. I have told them, as I now tell you, that the place to have victory is before you read the dirty story, before you look at the lewd picture, before your mind dwells on forbidden topics, before you neck and pet and unduly stimulate sex desire and set the fires of Hell burning in your own breast. Yes, a Christian can live a happy, victorious life, but he cannot do that and play with sin. -- John R. Rice

Children who do not want to start fires should not play with matches. The girl who does not want to fall in love with, and marry a drunkard, should make up her mind to never date with a boy who drinks, or with a boy or man unworthy to be her husband. -- John R. Rice

Everything that grieves the blessed Holy Spirit who lives within us should be hated and lamented and judged. The ungrieved Spirit will give us joy and peace and victory. Let us make sure that the holy Guest within us is not grieved by any tolerance of sin, by any rebellion against the will of God, by any disobedience to the heavenly vision. -- John R. Rice

Soul winning is the greatest thing in the world. What is there in all the universe that one could do which would have a reward for millions of years to come, like soul winning? -- John R. Rice

Young converts ought to tell it. Don't wait.

You say, "I want to wait until I learn the Bible." You know you were a sinner and Jesus forgave you, don't you? Well, tell that. You are not telling what you do know. If you don't go while your heart is warm, while the fresh, sweet flush of happiness of salvation is on you, you may never go. Christian, when you get saved, set out to win souls. Young converts ought to win souls. - John R. Rice

A man is to lead his family.

That is the way it was with Joshua, in Joshua, chapter 24. Joshua called all the elders and the judges and the heads of tribes and the chief men of Israel together at Shechem and said to them: ". . .choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, [beyond the flooded Jordan across, coming into Palestine] or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." --Josh. 24:15

And the closing of the chapter says that as long as Joshua lived and as long as these other elders lived and "overlived Joshua," the nation did not turn away to idolatry and sin.

How important it is for a man to win his family! - John R. Rice

Now, will you notice this story? Here is Andrew. As far as we know, he has just been converted. And then, he goes out and finds his own brother Peter. Peter was a pretty rough guy. I know he cursed and swore because when he got backslidden, he fell into cursing and swearing again. He must have been a natural leader among the wild crowd because he got to be a leader for God's people later.

Andrew said, "I'm going to get my brother Peter saved. And he went to him. Did it take long palaver? No, in this case, just brotherly love and influence and witness. "Pete, I found the Messiah; I've found the Saviour; come on Pete." And he brought him to Jesus.

Concern in the heart and the sweet influence of the Holy Spirit do wonderful things. It isn't that you have to know all the philosophy, nor be a great debater. You don't have to bring a lot of argument. Only lovingkindness and a sweet invitation to come to Jesus. You can win them. - John R. Rice
